When duty calls

So I may have a teensy tinsy bit of an addictive personality, in that it's easy for me to get extremely wrapped up in something.  Like the summer I ate only strawberries.  Or the time I was convinced that if I practiced enough, 6 months was all it took to become a professional tennis player.

And today, I discovered video games.  We never played these growing up and I didn't have any brothers to teach me gaming skills as a child.  And I tell you, I missed out!  There's a whole world of video games that I haven't explored and you could spend $60 on a video game that can entertain you for days - way cheaper than taking a trip or even going to the movies.

I spent only a few hours tonight playing Call of Duty: Black Ops II and I ended up improving to the point where I made as many kills as times I was killed.  And it was so totally fun.  I also never realized the kind of 'guy gossiping' that goes on while they play video games.  It was an entire ecosystem that I've never been exposed to and I learned so much from it.  Just don't tell the guys I was actually listening to what they were saying.

Perhaps an Xbox is not in my future, as I could easily see myself emerging as a slovenly mess from between my couch cushions only to grab some Flaming Hot Cheetos and diet soda, but I definitely see myself contemplating buying a mini gaming system.  Any games you all play, even on your phone or tablet?

  4. Much of my childhood was spent in front of a Super Nintendo. My best friend, her little sister and I would kill hours playing Donkey Kong until her mother did her best to hide the controls. We always found them though. And when I get a game on my iphone, I have to play it nonstop until I finish it. Very much an addictive personality too :)

  6. Have you ever seen the King of the Hill where Hank gets addicted to "videa" games? I'd suggest you watch that but then you might get addicted to King of the Hill. If you aren't already (my son is), you know, being from Texas and all.

  7. I do have a brother--but he soon discovered I'm a hopeless cause when it comes to video games. I can't take the pressure!

Although, there were times it worked in my favor--karate moves, for instance, worked especially well when I spazzed and just start hitting buttons as fast as my fingers could fly. My character would twirl and hit and kick with such speed there's no way my opponent could keep up. Come to think of it, I do believe that was the last game I ever played with my brother. Huh.

  10. Guilty of owning a gaming system my entire life until recently. I got a Super Nintendo for Christmas at age 6 and still have that with about a million games (it still works!) and briefly had a gamecube for Paper Mario and Pimkin (OMG google that and watch a youtube, it's adorable).

  11. Be careful, these games are addictive as hell. After I witnessed that first hand, I never even tried playing any myself.

  12. I was addicted to Bejeweled in college, and spent many, many, many late nights playing the game, frantically trying to beat the clock. I remember my then-bf would check on me in the middle of night, only to catch me online ... still playing!

Since then, I've never played any games. My older sister though? Playing some sort of Sims on her iPad every night. My nieces are only allowed to collect the coins in the morning! :p

  13. If you ever get a 360 try Halo multiplayer as well. It's the only reason why I pay for Xbox Live. I like call of duty, but not as much as I love Halo.

  14. Haha your summer sounds a bit like the time when I refused to eat anything but pb&j sandwiches. Only healthy. :)

We weren't allowed to have a video game system growing up. At one point we got a computer but if we wanted a game we had to program it ourself {really}. Now I have a Wii and some of the fitness games that I take out when I have time {haven't much lately}. I also have one really, really old game on my PC that my brother gave to me. I play occasionally when I find the CD but it's a definite time waster.

  19. I have been a gamer ever since my mother introduced me to Mario on the original Nintendo! I think I was five maybe... I don't play very often now but when I do, I enjoy games like: The Sims & World of Warcraft (both games on the cpu) and Mario & Final Fantasy are others I enjoy. :)

So funny that you got to eavesdrop on the guys playing! :P

  20. Now I want to play. Seriously. I have only dabbled in video games but none like this. My brother had me play Settlers of Catan over Thanksgiving break - that was an interesting game!

  21. this is so funny, i tend to fall into that category once in awhile and, so yes, i have played a few games in my life. it all started with intellivision and pogo (old). then onto nintendo (the first one) where i played mario with my cousin until 4 in the morning. skip ahead to my son being 4 and getting him the nintendo 64 at a flea market; ii played donkey kong for hours on that thing, i still have the song from that stuck in my head today. then the playstation he got for christmas where i also got hooked on ssx tricky (a snowboarding game). after the play station it all got way too complicated for me so i haven't played one since. i did beat plants vs zombies twice on my phone, that game definitely brings out the crack head in me.

  22. I used to be addicted to Scrabble on my phone. I finally had to delete the entire game off my phone. Actually, come to think of it, I don't have any game on my phone. Oh wait, yes I do - Instagram, Twitter, Email. Also known as things that rob you of time. ;)
