Them thar mountains

We're going back to the snowy mountains this weekend. Frenchie and I are taking my sister up for the first time, it's really an early birthday present for her. She has been itching to try snowboarding, bought the entire boarding outfit and didn't have anyone to go with her. Keep your fingers crossed for me that Frenchie's shoulder stays put and we don't have to flag down ski patrol or a random French doctor couple to help us shove it back into place.

It's really warm (around 80 degrees) here during the day so it feels strange to be packing sweaters and wool socks. I literally worked up a sweat running around like a mad woman this morning trying to find where I stashed all of my fleece gear (PS - Have you seen the Northface meme?). I stopped by the ski shop to get some gloves for the sis since she forgot that she would need those on the slopes, grabbed and sucked down an iced coffee while I was out. And now I realized that it's too much caffeine, especially after not really having any this week. My hands are shaking, I have to backspace three sentences for every one that I type. Ke$ha, your dance jams are NOT helping. ...And I should have stopped about five sentences ago. Have a wonderfully wicked weekend folks!

One of the bonuses of getting into the startup environment is the opportunity to converse and exchange ideas and resources with people who are heavily involved in the technology arena. I am fortunate enough that the founder of the organization I am working with is well-versed in technology and can find a quick, free fix to any technical problem that I've run into. He's also the one that recommended the super slick new laptop that I have (and love) so I listen to all of his advice on this topic.

Example: Have people told you that they can't access your blog and then you're frantically calling random people up and asking them to check your site and see if the content is still there? Not to worry anymore, enter "Down for everyone or just me?" Just go to the website (yes, it's literally www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com) and type in the website that you think is down.

Tada! In less than a second, you can see if your site is really down or if it's just one user. I hope this is one tech tip that will help you out the next time you're in a jam.

Library letdown

To shake up the routine a bit, I did my work from a car service department for the entire morning and was planning on working from a public library for the second half. Before I get into the library, the car dealership = perfect work environment. They had work cubicles, free wifi, coffee, soda, water and snacks and a television for waiting patrons. I took my car in to get annual maintenance but now I might just go there more often to get my car "serviced" and use it as my other office. Just kidding. But maybe not.

I went to the public library around my neighborhood around 2 pm, which is apparently when kids get out of school. Did you know that? The library was overrun with pre-teen and teenage kids but also grownups. In the middle of the afternoon. I couldn't find a free table and I couldn't believe it!

It was really quite sad. There were barely any books or people among the stacks. Even the children's area, where you're used to seeing bean bags and cute little bookshelves, was empty. But the computer lab was bursting full and there were people lounging at the tables with laptops. I left shortly afterward. I had it in my head that I was going to get a library card and wander around for a few hours. Are people just not into reading anymore? Have we really become so inundated with technology that no one sits down and just picks up a book? I really do pity those people. Books have always been an escape for me, a trip to adventureland and an easy way to exercise my imagination. Next week I might check out another library and I cross my fingers that it will be jammed pack with books and people reading them.

Today was my second day of working from home and my first day of working with the Internet from home. Tada - I am now no longer a meditating monk living in a silent cave! I feel connected to the world and I have really missed my Internet window shopping.

As this is my first foray into working from home, there are a lot of new things I'm experiencing. Like the sound of birds chirping in the morning. And in the afternoon. And every time they fly by my window because they're taunting the neighbor cat that's lounging on the balcony. And I start to wonder about things like how people who work from home don't end up enormous whales from the continual access to food. In the office, every scrap, crumb, shred and sliver of food got devoured and immediately but here at home, there's food in the fridge and in the pantry at all times. I find myself wandering over every 30 minutes, just to take a peek and make sure it's all there or something like that. How do you not overeat yourself to death? And has someone invented a refrigerator lock that only unlocks at certain points during the day? Because I am almost done with a family sized box of Honey Bunches of Oats and I NEED HELP. I also wonder when I'm going to start talking to myself. Maybe that's a week two occurrence. Also, people are NICE in the grocery store on the weekdays. No, you go first, no you. Please, after you. I'm so sorry I bumped your cart. That never happens on the weekend. That blue-haired old lady will gut you if you take the last almond milk carton.

I also received this (well, two of them) in a ginormous cardboard box this afternoon. Yay dining room chair! They came out exactly how I thought they were going to look and they're actually very comfy to sit on. Now for the table and bench to arrive... any minute now... time's a ticking.

Tomorrow I might just make myself a fort out of all the extra moving boxes we have laying around. Because, who knows, my best thinking may be done in a cardboard fort.

We are finally moved. The last box has been opened (notice, I didn't say unpacked) and our furniture is all generally in the right place. It is actually quite odd seeing our furniture together and we definitely fill up both of the closets we have. But even with the amount of stuff we collectively have, we still have plenty of room for activities in the living room and kitchen - like ballroom dancing or P90X. Our dining room table arrives God knows when but two of the dining chairs I ordered get here tomorrow. One thing that I never really paid attention to is the amount of books that I have. We spent part of the weekend looking for a decent sized, decent priced bookcase but couldn't find anything that fit our style. Do any of you have any recommendations of where to find non-particle board bookcases?

The cable guy comes tomorrow and we'll finally have TV and internet. It has been deathly silent in the apartment without either, and Frenchie and I ate dinner last night, just talking to each other, without background noise or distraction. It was kind of odd and the silence was deafening. It is a serious testament to how bombarded we are with information, sounds and colours these days and it was a nice break from it all for around 12 hours. But I want all that stuff back now! I am currently sitting in the "library" in our apartment complex checking my email and blogging. Which is to say, I'll have to come back later this afternoon to finish all the blog checking as I have missed out on all the early Monday morning action and hearing about what y'all did over the weekend. So pardon my unplugged post for now and I'll check in with you a little later.

This post is coming to you in the middle of the afternoon because <drum roll> I am done! Last day at the job and now I'm home. It was really lovely and bittersweet hearing all of the heartfelt goodbyes and hearing the appreciation in their voices. I received several sweet cards as well and I teared up reading just one of them so I'm saving the rest for later. I am going to miss all of the connections that I made but I am not going to miss how much of my life it took. No blackberry for the first time in six years - I keep forgetting and searching for it around the house. Deep breath, relax. Now, the day (and year) is full of potential... I wonder what comes next.

The Asus Zenbook. I have a serious need to run the Microsoft Office Suite seamlessly so I knew the Mac wasn't going to work. But this ultrabook gives it a run for the money. It is super light and really travel friendly. When I take it on the road next week, I will let you guys know how it does.

Modern museum

A modern setting for vintage furnishings and art is always such a fun contrast to see in action. I don't know where I would begin in pulling together a cohesive design but the owners of this home have done it quite effectively. Personally, I wouldn't be able to live in a home that has as many pieces of art in it as this one does. Things would be bound to break and get cluttered and dusty under my care but I really appreciate the neat and organized display in this house. Particularly the kitchen - the kitchenware looks like ancient artifacts. Also, the polished concrete (?) floors on the first floor are just gorgeous. This home is in the South and is likely to get hot in a hurry so the cool floors are a relief I'm sure. It's the practical things in a home for me, obviously.

As if a testament to how little I venture outside, I spontaneously went for a jog around the neighborhood and spent the entire time squinting into the sun. No, there will not ever be a need for me to wear reflectors when running as my chalky-white skin will surely reflect any light that bounces its way. It's a different type of light in the morning and maybe, starting next week, I'll start to make longer morning runs part of my daily routine. It feels strange saying that and it'll feel even stranger when it comes to that point.

Today was a bank holiday and I didn't go into the office. But even though I had a call this morning, ran errands, stopped off to see baby Jai, I still feel like I was holed up in the silent cavern of the empty apartment all day. I am hoping that once we move and I get a desk set up, I'll be able to feel more productive even though I'll be at home. I am hoping that there is a difference, actually physically removing yourself from the couch and going into a dedicated work space. Maybe part of it is background noise. It's eerily silent in the apartment when I'm by myself. Maybe some muzak in the background. Do you guys work to music? If so, what kind and do you have any suggestions for me?

As if the job news isn't enough, one thing that I've hinted at before is the fact that Frenchie and I are moving in together. Next week. The day after I quit my job. I guess when it rains, it pours.

We're not married, heck, we're not even engaged but it is really the right move for us to make. We are getting a bigger place, where I will be able to set up that dream home office, and will also have room to entertain. We'll also be able to have guests stay over comfortably and I'm really looking forward to being a hostess. You can imagine, when I told my ultra-conservative Asian parents about this, they weren't exactly jumping for joy. But Frenchie and I are both closer to 30 than we are to 20 and it makes sense to me and him to take our relationship to this next level.

However, it didn't really hit me until I was picking up mail from my current apartment that I'm leaving the place that I spent my first working years. That I'm leaving the place that I lived in with only a mattress on the floor and a desk for the first six months, the place where I crawled into bed in the wee hours of the morning time and time again after a long night at work, the place where I held my first real dinner parties and where I was glad to go back to after a holiday at my parents' home even. I was lucky to have it and an awesome, drama-free roommate that put up with my nutty work schedule.

We both have a lot of work to do before we get to next Saturday and a heck of a lot of packing to do. I'm excited though - more excited than I have been in a long time. I think I've craved this change for awhile and it's a relief, in a way, to finally be getting it.

Why I heart the BBC

When we were in France, after our afternoon naps we would watch BBC 1 through 4 on television before we would go out for dinner. And I must say, I am utterly addicted. Why can't we have this type of quality programming in the US?

Sherlock is one of my favourite mini series by the BBC. It tracks a 21st century, gritty Sherlock and Watson through present day London and spins some of the Holmes' classics into modern interpretations. It's smarty done, well paced and packed with enough action and suspense to keep you coming back for more. Unfortunately in the US, we catch this show a season behind and there are only three episodes to one series. Needless to say, if you love all things Holmes, you must catch this one on DVD.

The Brits, it seems, take to their game shows as much or more than the Americans. What I must say though is that their shows are much smarter than the American game shows that I've seen. Much like the US game shows, they ask for the contestants to possess a very arcane set of knowledge, however there were some game shows that asked their contestants to do maths very quickly and accurately, had teams made up of "quizzing teams" and pitted them against each other and so on and so forth. My favourite of all of these is the game show "Pointless." It pits a pair of contestants against a surveyed group and asks them questions. The most obscure and least mentioned answer to the question receives the fewest points whereas the most popular and obvious answer receives the most. As the name suggests, the goal is to remain as close to pointless as possible. The hosts of this one really make the show. They have a rather unique way of being demeaning, charming and hilarious all at the same time. I kind of wish we had this show in the US just so I could watch how they go about just doing that.

Top Gear was another show that I just utterly enjoyed. I know there's an American version and I don't know if it's quite as good as the UK edition. But the guys on the show are just hilarious and the cars they drive are just out of this world. And the locations! The locations they get to drive these cars are just amazing. World renowned race tracks in Germany, the streets of Milan, it's just a feast for the eyes as far as scenery, even if you're not really into cars.

I just noticed that all of these really excellent shows feature men. There are plenty I watched on British television that featured women - like Country House Rescue - but I think this says to me that deep down inside, I am really more of a tomboy.

My home office

I am so pumped to have a flexible working schedule AND environment. Frenchie and I are moving in two weeks (hopefully) and I'll be using a spare bedroom as an office as well. I haven't really had time to think about a home office and what type of design I'm looking for but I want it to be clean, bright, organized and INSPIRATIONAL! Not too girlie but not too sterile or masculine either. I live in an apartment as well so I'd like to not have to build or install shelving or cabinets. I've been looking online for some samples and have found some snaps below that I like. A common theme that runs through these rooms is that there is a lot of white space. I wonder if I'm drawn to that because it represents a sort of blank slate for me to start with. Lighting is also so very key - particularly natural lighting.

Do y'all have any tips as far as a home office? Do you feel that more "things" in your office space present more distraction or inspiration?

Short timer

So this post is a little difficult to write and I've been thinking about how to address it for a few days now. How better than to do it than through my new title at work: short timer. According to Urban Dictionary, a short timer is:

That bastard co-worker who found a better job and no longer gives a shit about shit.

Yep, I am leaving my current job! This has been my first job out of college and I've been here almost a full six years. However, I've known for awhile that my first job would not be the end goal of my career and it has steadily and consistently sucked the living daylight out of me. I have consistently churned out 70-80 hour work weeks for the last six years and it's time to move on. However, instead of focusing on what I'm not going to miss, let's focus on the countless things that I'm going to miss about it - the limitless access to resources, things I've learned, and mostly, the people that I've met. Well, most of the people I've met...

So, crystal ball, what does my future hold? I will actually be joining a start up nonprofit in the beginning of March! A complete 180 from where I have been. And I will be working from home initially so I am most desirous of advice from those of you bloggers who do and how you stay focused and motivated. Mostly, I am really excited about the flexibility I will have in my work schedule and the new direction that I'll be able to take my career.

I've received so much support from Frenchie, my family and my friends - it's really reassuring to know that people have faith in me and my abilities. I will be updating you all more often and cheers to 2012!

There are some exciting and new things afoot in Rooth World. If I wasn't so jacked up on caffeine and lack of caloric consumption, I'd actually be able to form real words and sentences to tell you what has been going on in my life and what to expect over the next six months. Honestly, I'm scared and nervous, as I haven't been in a long time. But I'm pumped too and really looking forward to this spring. I am crossing my fingers that tomorrow I'll be able to provide more clarity - I feel like a crate of TNT and the fuse has been lit.

One thing I can't emphasize enough is how much inspiration and courage that I've been able to glean from the blogosphere. All of you have been wonderful and positive influences on my life throughout the past year and have made me come to the point where I have a little bit more confidence in myself as well. We will see how it all proves out but thank you, thank you again.

Don't you just love it when a very plain vanilla exterior surprises you with bursts of colour and creativity on the interior? Like some books with their covers and this home. Straight off the bat, you can tell that the owners have splashed their personal touch on a very white, 1920's traditional home with solid bones and good flow. You're smacked right in the face upon entering the home, with the mod light fixture and neon coloured table. I do appreciate the bright poppy accents throughout the house, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. Do pause to admire the dark, wide planked wood floors and the ceiling to floor white drapes that flutter about in the kitchen. Just think, if they can surprise you with whimsical touches here and there (like a tangerine sofa), what can you do with your own space?

Mmm hmm, how do I describe the food in Chamonix? Darn tootin' delicious, diverse and expensive?

When in any foreign locale, one must sample the local cuisine, and for the Alps, that cuisine is Savoyard style food. What that means for us tourists is authentic fondue and my very first fondue experience. A melty cheesy mess for staying warm in the mountains - if that doesn't fill you up and build up the fat reserves for the winter, there's little hope for you. We had a tomato fondue with melted reblochon cheese, accompanied with French bread and boiled potatoes for dipping. Never have I eaten so much cheese in one sitting before and never have I gotten sick of cheese so quickly. It was a wonderfully novel and gooey experience to begin with but my cheese tolerance is only so high. I waddled out of the restaurant, swearing off cheese for the rest of my life. But Chamonix is all about the cheese. On one little touristy strip alone, there were at least three cheese and charcuterie shops in a row - pip pip pip. And of course we had to pop in to stare at the heaps and mounds of dried sausages and cubes of cheese all stacked together. The shops smelled a little bit like wet dog. Unappetizing, I know, but apparently, when you mix together dried, cured meats and moldy cheese, that's what you get. Wet dog smell.

One of the obsessions that I happen to share with the Europeans is nutella. Remember all of my nutella obsessions earlier? Well, the first thing that encounter in Europe, right when I step off the plane in Geneva, is a gleaming white duty free store - like a beckoning beacon - with VATS of nutella. Literally vats. Unfortunately, it was neither practical nor in the best interest of my health to buy one of those to bring home so Frenchie and I had to satisfy our sweet tooth with nutella crepes and hot chocolate. Real hot chocolate, not the mix stuff, made with melted chunks of chocolate in milk. We found a little cafe on the first day that served the real deal and all sorts of sweet and savory crepes. We probably should have never left. Sigh. I love Europe.

One of the quirkier things that Frenchie and I do when we travel is try non-local cuisines in those different cities, to see how it compares with our tastes and American taste buds. For example, in just about every European city that I've visited, I've dined at an Indian restaurant. Curries and biryani are my adopted comfort food and, as Chamonix is a popular British destination, the Indian food there was quite good. We also had some soul-warming miso soup at a surprisingly tasty Japanese spot and unique Continental cuisine in a tiny, eight top restaurant called La Petite Kitchen. The food was precisely cooked and plated and the chef sent out little treats of soups and desserts during the meal, which made it quite special in a touristy town like Chamonix.

I am lucky enough to live in an extremely food oriented city where the selection is diverse, food is fresh and plates are cheap. However, during this vacation, we sampled some delightful French fare - from freshly baked French baguettes to chocolate digestives and homemade macaroons - and drank our fill of French wine, beer and whatever else we damn well pleased. We groaned with the fullness of our bellies after every meal, swearing that we'd never eat that much again, and then repeat it all the next day. We were on vacation after all.

Looking down into cloud covered Chamonix valley

We're back from snowy and cold Chamonix! Despite the injury, it was a terrific time and we both really needed the opportunity to unplug, which is definitely easier to do in a different continent and time zone. As Frenchie dislocated his shoulder at the end of the third ski day, we were still able to fit in a good amount of skiing and spent the rest of the time sightseeing.

The town of Chamonix itself is a picturesque, quaint village nestled in the valley between towering mountains. We were able to walk to everything within the town and buses shuttled skiers and snowboarders to the various different ski areas, all within a 20 minute ride. Chamonix is a popular destination for the British set and we were able to converse in English in almost every restaurant and shop we entered. It was fun attempting to piece together French phrases and I felt a lot more confident by the end of the trip. Turns out we should have brushed up on the medical section of the French phrasebook instead of focusing on food and drink.

I'm glad to be back and throughout the week I'll be sharing more pictures and stories from the trip. Happy February!

Checking in from France

Bonsoir! I hope you all are having a great week. Frenchie and I have been eating and drinking a little too much but the chocolat chaud and vin chaud is too tasty and comforting to turn down. Unfortunately, Frenchie dislocated his shoulder on the ski slopes this afternoon, something that he's done two times prior. We were lucky as a French couple, both doctors, helped us off the slopes and popped Frenchie's shoulder back in place. We'll judge how conditions are over the next few days and see if Frenchie wants to continue skiing on Thursday.My friends back in Texas also delivered a healthy baby boy on Friday while we were in transit so congrats to them as well. I can't wait to get back to meet him.

Crud, I'm not ready. We are flying out in less than 12 hours and I'm not ready. I have kinda packed - throwing every warm thing that I own into a pack. I have kinda prepared - printed most reservation receipts and generally have some sort of idea of where everything is and where we're staying. I don't think we're ready for skiing as we aren't even sure what mountains are suited to our ability and we haven't been able to maintain any type of physical training routine. I am mentally not ready - this past week has been a whirlwind and I barely remembered that we were going somewhere. I haven't practiced French pronounciation like I said I would or learned any key words / phrases (like foods!).

But whether or not we're ready, we're going and we're going soon. I don't know what the Internet situation is going to be at the hotel but I'm hoping that we'll be able to find some sort of connection that isn't absurdly priced. I'm going to try not to injure myself or Frenchie and I'll be back soon with tons of pictures. Until then, BON VOYAGE!

The write stuff

There are less than a handful of ways to maintain my sanity on a daily basis: drinking very hot coffee very quickly in the morning, unplugging at night, exercise in general and writing. I went a little nuts the other day and went on a journal buying binge. This is probably the healthiest of all the binges I could possibly go on and I justified it by saying that it's just a way of staying sane. I'm currently working with a lime green Paperthinks journal from Kate's Paperie. It's really bright and compact but it doesn't have the elastic band that keeps the journal closed like Moleskines. The pages are a bit thinner and will bleed through if you use any type of marker. But it's serviceable and adequate for my scribbles.

Below are the two cuties that I bought - a Leuchtturm1917 and Rhodia. The Leuchtturm looks the same as a Moleskine but has some unique features. I ordered one that has light dots spaced across the pages instead of lines and the pages have page numbers in the bottom corner. The Rhodia has really smooooth pages and you can tell that it'll be nice to write in. Frenchie wants that one for himself so I might have to order myself a new one.

There are a few other things that are tumbling around in my life (including a sht ton of work) and preventing me from blogging and reading blogs as often as I'd like. At my earliest ability, I am going to TRY TRY TRY to catch up and see how the new year is treating everyone.

Happy Chinese / Lunar New Year! Good luck, health and prosperity to all! Did you get your red envelope filled with crisp bills today? Or did you dole out the cash to younger relatives? It is the year of the dragon, which means this is my sister AND my dad's year. This year is also supposed to be a prosperous one, according to Asian people everywhere. Apparently, it will be a year of financial boon and baby boom! It is good luck to have children in a dragon year as dragons are seen as auspicious and those who are born in the year of the dragon tend to be brave, innovative and highly driven. So here's your second chance to start that new year over again and with some dragon-like resolutions. Mine?

Don't be afraid of to stoke the fire that burns within. You may just ignite the world. (Sorry, sorry, I just couldn't resist.)

My sister spent the weekend with us and on Saturday night, I made chorizo pork tacos and tonight I cooked meatloaf. Meatloaf is one of those classic American comfort foods that I never ate in my childhood. The first time I had it, it was actually my own kitchen experiment in college. It was so filling, easy to make and cheap that I put it in the regular rotation. However, cooking regularly is hard! Buying the ingredients, spending the time and effort and then cleaning up afterwards. I have so much more appreciation for what my mom did on a regular basis when we were children - a different, healthy meal everyday. And that was just the feeding part. Feelin' the love from San Francisco

This afternoon Frenchie returned from his conference in San Francisco - hooray! While he was in the city, he went shopping and scouted out All Saints (for me, I really want some boots from there), Ted Baker, Ben Sherman and other stores. I haven't been to SF in a fairly long time but from what I remember, it was always blustery and had a lively, bopping little Chinatown. I thought it was so much cooler than Los Angeles, my only measure of other cities in California.

Frenchie came back from his trip talking about how tasty the seafood was and how steep the hills were and also bearing a little package for me!

They are really sweet and my favourite part is the inscription on the insides. The red / orange one reads "Meet Your Match" and the gold one says "Heart of Gold." Frenchie does good sometimes - real good.

Crossword puzzle race

In the wee hours of the morning, I boarded a Southwest flight and plopped myself down in a window seat (so I could fall asleep leaning on it). Southwest airlines has an open seating policy so you can sit wherever you would like. Within moments of sitting down, an older couple in their 60s sit down next to me. The older woman (let's call her Barb) sat next to me in the middle seat and her husband was in the aisle seat. It only struck me as a little odd at the time, as the flight was half empty and there were plenty of open seats all around us.

I had forgotten to bring a book to read, so I picked up the in flight magazine and flipped to the "easy" version crossword to kill some time. Next door, Barb also flips open the magazine, turns to the same page, same crossword and starts furiously filling it out. And I mean fast and furious. I try to ignore her, even though she is literally inches away and the pink feathers on the end of her pen are wriggling violently in the corner of my eye. As she gets further along in the puzzle and the clues get more difficult, Barb slows her pace, although it is punctuated with moments of frantic scribbling when she's figured a word out. At around two-thirds of the way through the crossword, I start to lose interest and as I'm folding up the magazine, Barb triumphantly places her finished crossword puzzle down on her tray. I quickly sneak a glance at it and then start shaking in silent laughter. Her answer for 23 across, Pine for... "AHEL" and for 30 down, exotic apparel... "CHLENM"... and it just got worse from there. The poor woman was so caught up in her crossword race with me that, in order to beat me, she just filled out the words she knew and then filled in random letters for the blank boxes.

So, Barb, if you're by chance reading this, you win the race. Now go back and fill out the answers correctly this time.

Today has been a full day - I just got home from work and have to wake up in a few hours to catch an early flight out to the west for work. It smells like burnt milk

Frenchie is out on a business trip this week and my sick sis stayed over with me last night. When someone is sick, what do you offer them? The custom at my house is to offer him or her a hot beverage. In my sister's case, we had tea. Lotsa loose leaf green tea and then gypsy cold care tea with honey. It isn't very cold outside but there is something comforting and soothing about a cradling a hot cuppa tea in your hands. Yesterday, we must have drank tea for around five hours.

After around 9 straight hours of work conference calls during the day, even though it was supposed to be a day of rest, it's finally quiet. I have the doors propped open and it smells like someone is burning milk outside. For some reason, the smell is calming and carries with it a memory of my mom making oatmeal (with raisins) for breakfast when we were little. She would invariably burn the milk a little but, no matter, it would fill up our little round tummies full.

A little cottage on Cottage Street

This cute, quaint little cottage is aptly located on Cottage Street (they get really original here in Houston). I'd like to pose a question to y'all though. Why is it that builders don't separate the family room and kitchen layouts like they used to in the 1920s? Sometimes when you're cooking, you don't want the food smell to seep into every room. The owners of the house are able to tie in the two rooms effectively with the matching cabinets. With these older homes, it's easy for them to feel tight and cluttered but the storage system hides the mess in a classy way. The house is little, less than 1,400 square feet, but has a large front and back deck and also lets in plenty of light in the bedrooms and living areas. The house has the original woodburning fireplace and wood floors.

PS - I'm currently in the market for a dining room set - can anyone tell me what type of chairs those are?

Why I couldn't sleep a wink during Christmas holiday

I have an irrational fear of stepping out of my apartment in the morning and being attacked by zombies who have been transformed during the night. I also have an irrational fear of seeing a little girl with long dark hair standing at the foot of my bed in the middle of the night. All of these irrationalities compounded by reading The Strain by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro during the Christmas holiday kept me awake until the wee hours of the morning... peeking over my covers and making sure I memorized the quickest and easiest exit out of my bedroom. Yes, it's quite insane. The Strain, very briefly, tells the tale of a vampire virus being transmitted rapidly and without mercy through Manhattan. The carriers of the virus, once turned into vampire / zombie hybrids, return to their homes and seek out their loved ones, satisfying an insatiable need to feed. For those who like scary stories, it's a truly entertaining with a fair share of gore and action. It's not angsty or full of teenage love triangles and you can enjoy it casually and for fun. But I couldn't get over the chapter where a little girl walks out of the morgue to her home in Connecticut, goes up to her parents' bedroom while they slumber and unhinges her jaw to eat her dad. Or the chapter where the suburban mom sips on a few of glasses of wine while her children are down for their afternoon nap, goes to check in on them and finds her neighbor feeding on her newborn daughter. Just make sure, if you read the book, that you're okay with sleeping with the lights on!

It's funny (or really, not) how quickly my mood can change, with the blink of an eye, because of something that someone says about me. I can become elated, walking on rainbows and floating on pink marshmallows, or deflated, like a kiddie pool forgotten outside in the fall. With all the mucky, stale brown water to match. I know I'm supposed to be at the age where I have enough self confidence to take it all with a grain of salt, to know that one statement does not define my worth or my value as a person. I'm not there yet though. True, I can brush it off more easily - take in criticism, assess it for what it is and then move on with my life. But it's the little gnat, constantly buzzing around my face and for now, I can't shake it.

Today I'll take it for what it is. But tomorrow is a new day and I will start all over again. I did say this year that I will forgive, particularly myself, more.

Patio Huguenot

I don't have a background in design or architecture but I know what I think looks good - and these horse stables designed by 10dedosvalentes in Oporto, Portugal are pretty stinking handsome. Horse stables have a tendency to lean toward the country or rustic-style design, so it's more rare to see a modern-type structure. The design team's goal was to create a combined horse and human environment next to the outdoor riding arena. The bottom floor is comprised of the horse stalls and tacking area whereas the top floor has a indoor viewing area, toilet and lockers. It almost looks more like an apartment complex than an equestrian building, particularly with the sunny balcony up top, which I'm sure will be a popular resting haven for riders after a long day. My only criticism of the building is that I would have wanted more windows downstairs to increase air circulation for the horses. What do you think - thumbs up for the modern design or do you like the traditional style instead?

Extreme weather

The blog gods must be reading my entries because right after I gloated to everyone about how glorious the weather was in Houston, we had the most extreme weather on Monday. This morning, I woke up to a pale green sky and, being a tornado-alley born girl, I knew exactly what that foretold. Over the next few hours, Houston took a pounding of tornadoes, hail, severe thunderstorms and flash floods. I was stuck in traffic for over five hours trying to drop my car off to be serviced. At times, it's okay to have a conservative and safe personality and today it totally paid off. I saw more cars than I can count think they could drive through the high water and have to get towed out because the owners flooded their engines. I may have sat idle in the middle of the road for over two hours but at least I didn't have to "float" down the middle of the street and chalk up my vehicle as totaled. I also asked myself around 20 times why I don't own a truck - must remember for future vehicle purchases. While taking some back roads to get back to work, I saw blocks of houses under water as well. I hope everyone in the blogosphere is safe, warm and DRY. Happy Monday folks!

It is flipping glorious outside

It's a balmy 75 degrees outside right now and sunny - a glorious Saturday in Texas. We went for a jog this morning and everyone was out walking their dogs or riding bikes. The patio we had brunch on was actually kind of hot with the sun beating down on us. It's hard to imagine that it's winter on such a spring-like day. Sadly, I'm back in the office for the afternoon but hopefully will get this work pounded out quickly and can spend the rest of the day enjoying the sun and warmth. I hope y'all are enjoying your Saturday, catching some football if you want to and resting up.

PS - Houstonians, clean up after your dogs! There is nothing more disgusting than smeared dog poo all over the jogging trail that people have tracked for another five feet...

Something to look forward to

So after the downer of a post yesterday, I do have some fun news to share - Frenchie and I are going to France! We'll be flying into Switzerland at the end of January and then hopping over to Chamonix for a week to ski, eat, shop and sight see. This will be a trip of firsts: I've never been to France before and I've also never skied in Europe. I'm absolutely delighted to be able to try skiing in Europe where I hear the mountains and trails are very different from the states. Mont Blanc is the tallest mountain in Western Europe and the verticals here are twice what they are at Whistler!

You can't imagine the change this has had on my outlook for 2012. I was actually excited to go back to work because I have this trip coming up this month. Now, mind you, the off-trail skiing here is supposed to be the best in the world but I am in no way an expert skier. So I'll be attempting to stay safe but also test my boundaries a bit and push myself to be braver. I've also downloaded some Learning French podcasts to try and memorize some basic phrases before I go. I'll leave you all with a few pictures of where we'll be going (eeps!) and also welcome any suggestions or advice if any of you have been before.

Goodbye old buddy

My trainer called me last night to let me know that my buddy had coliced and died. Although he wasn't my horse, I was the only person who rode him with any frequency and he always greeted me at the gate to his paddock. He was a cookie hound and loved to nibble on you while you tacked him up. Urkel (yep - you heard it right) was an old man (around 20) when he passed and had a good life up to the very end. Riding is going to be put on hold for the next few weeks until they find a new horse. I'll miss my sleepy yet dependable partner in the ring but also look forward to the new horse they're bringing in. Unfortunately, this isn't encouraging me to buy a horse - even though that has been on my resolution list since I was a wee one!

Have you all seen this stunning exhibit by Yayoi Kusama at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (found via notcot.org and pictures via here)? Kusama set up an all white room as her blank canvas and then gave the children visitors thousands of dot stickers for them to stick wherever their little hearts desired. They turned this very sterile almost-IKEAesque environment into an explosion of colour, which is appropriately named The Obliteration Room. I never get tired of looking at the pictures of the transformation - it makes me smile real big. Who didn't love putting stickers all over the place when they were children? My bedroom at home still has gobs of permanent stickers that my sister and I stuck everywhere when we were kids. We just found her old Lisa Frank stickers last month - guess what rainbow surprise accompanied each gift tag for Christmas?

Isn't this awesome?! This is one of the best gifts I received for my birthday: an embossing heating gun, embossing powders and stamps. Okay, so it's super dorky but I love it. I write a lot of cards - thank you cards, birthday cards, holiday cards to everybody and this allows me to make my own. You can bet I'll be making some lovey dovey ones for Valentine's Day. For now, I'll just be stamping and embossing my glossy gold initials on everything.

In my previous blog entry, I had mentioned that my sister was planning on baking a champagne layer cake for the New Year's Eve party that my parents were throwing. On Friday, when I asked her if she wanted to go buy the ingredients and get prepared for baking, she threw back at me, "You make things not fun! Everything turns into a task!" Which I almost retorted back immediately with a "No!" but didn't because it's actually true. I get so focused on completing the goal at hand that I laser focus on laying out the steps to getting it done. It is true that my mom called me Monica, as in Monica from Friends due to my bossiness, the entire time I was home this holiday break. I forget that it can be fun getting things done and "teamwork doesn't always feel like work." My sister and I have opposite personalities - she is incredibly creative, artistic and the consummate procrastinator while I am more linear, organized and a planner. I owe my sister one for trying to slow me down and for providing some balance to my over-the-top personality sometimes. In 2012 I will try to be more forgiving, particularly towards myself and just focus on enjoying the journey instead of concentrating on getting to the destination.

And in case you were wondering, she did make the cake in time and it turned out beautifully and tasted delicious!

A little French flair

I can't believe I'm coming on the end of a wonderful holiday and break back at my parents' home. This was the longest amount of time I've spent with them ever since I graduated from college and it was divine. It was incredibly relaxing and I was able to unplug from work, which was the most important. I trust you all had a good time welcoming the new year.

And what better way to do it but with a new house discovery! The facade of this home is just too quaint - I love the awning over the front door and the shutters flanking the windows. The interior is decorated not exactly to my taste - leaning a bit much to a French rustic theme. But it's definitely roomy enough inside and the kitchen has the perfect design for entertaining. Plus who can resist those exposed beams that extend from the family room to the kitchen? You could even add a little herb garden in the side yard, adding a bit of fragrance in the air when you dine al fresco or just sit outside on a cool evening with a glass of wine.

My sis and I picked up Frenchie from the airport today and he'll be ringing in the New Year with my family this weekend. They're watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia right now so I thought I'd take a moment to reflect back very briefly on this past year. We've had our share of rough patches, what with the family emergency in May and my grandmother beginning dialysis this summer. But through it all, I feel as though my family and I have been buoyed by the sense of caring and closeness from our extended family and friends. For me, that has really been the game changer in 2011. I've learned that people are tougher than you ever thought possible and the desire to move on and live is inexplicable. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you all health and happiness in the next year. I hope to be here at this time next year, reflecting on the positive things I've taken from the year and looking forward to what's to come. My motto for 2012 is to live bravely, truly bravely - what's yours?

IKEA attacked my face

We had another whirlwind day of activity here at the Rooth Household, and I am most certain that my family is counting the days until I go back home so they can finally relax. I started the morning with a rather ambitious plan of reorganizing my sister's room and mine as well. We all shuffled over to IKEA to pick up some cheap yet practical and heavy storage pieces that we needed and just about spent the rest of the day putting all of it together. It took the entire afternoon and the evening for us to build two dressers and one nightstands as well as move all the furniture around. We also loaded up two full garbage bags of clothing to donate. Unfortunately, I also got popped in the face with some particle board from the dresser drawer, scratching a red Swoosh on my right cheek. Perfect timing as I'm due to see some old friends from high school tomorrow for lunch and they'll probably ask if I was attacked by a cat recently. Sigh. Anyway, it seems as though this holiday is just flying by but I hope that you all have been keeping busy with fun activities. You can at least count your blessings that you're not part of my family (it's the little things).

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, except for the whir of vacuum, whisk of the feather duster, churning of the washing machine and grumbling of the dryer...

My family and I spent all afternoon cleaning house, preparing to welcome Santa with open arms and a clean home. I wrapped one of my sister's bandannas around my face and got to work clearing out all the dust build up that had accumulated over god knows how long. We also have a gourmet mac & cheese bubbling away in the oven for tonight's dinner. Everyone has worked up quite an appetite due to the vigorous cleaning and because of the second (!) run that my dad, sister and I went on this afternoon. We raced, rather slowly, through the frigid rain (I swear a snow flake landed on my sleeve). Now, all that's left before the big day tomorrow is 90% of my sister's Christmas shopping to be delivered tonight and wrapped.

Tonight, I'm looking forward to putting my feet up, sipping on a peppermint hot chocolate and watching some iconic Christmas tv programming. I hope you all are geared up for the big day tomorrow and are staying warm and cozy.

I am now back in the "slightly more north" with my parents and sister until the new year and to that, I say THANK GOODNESS. It was about time for the 2011 work year to die. Because y'all know me and that I can never sit still, I have now embarked upon an exercise program for my dad. Today we went on his first walk / jog in over two years, even though it was a frigid 41 degrees outside. My dad's ultimate goal is to run a 5k in 2012 and my sister's goal for him is to lose 15 pounds. After today's experience, he's pretty inspired and encouraged. We went for over 2 miles and he was feeling okay - leg muscles a bit sore - at the end. I have faith in him and we're going to do it again tomorrow and force my sister to join us as well. The trick is keeping it up regularly but maybe if we stay consistent through next week, it will seem like more of a habit than a once-a-year occurrence.

I'm also trying not to go on an eating binge this holiday season, which is being tested right now as my sister cuts a thick slice of Sacher torte in the kitchen. My parents are vegetarian and I'd like to be able to cook more complex veggie dishes. Do any of you have any suggestions of meatless recipes that you've liked?

Happy belated winter solstice and happy belated birthday... to me! Sorry for the lack of posts. Yesterday was my birthday AND <crossing fingers> hopefully my last day in the office for the year. We celebrated at my friends' home with a catered Italian meal, white elephant gift exchange and cocktail shrimp tequila shots. We had four different birthday desserts: tiramisu, red velvet cupcakes, pecan pie and chocolate cake a la mode. I made out like a champ with birthday gifts too - every single one was incredibly thoughtful and perfect for me. I can't think of a more ideal way to celebrate a birthday. Also, congratulations Elle Sees - you are the winner of the giveaway! I'll be reaching out to you for your info.

On Saturday night after the massive holiday feast, I went out with my friends for some pre-birthday drinks at a bar in Houston called Prohibition. It features - you guessed it - Prohibition type drinks as well as flapper serving girls and a "burlesque" style show. In the middle of my first cocktail, my friend casually slips in that she and her boyfriend (who is one of my best of friends) are going to go diamond shopping the next day. Sputtering, I look up to see if they're going to announce their engagement but no, just casual Sunday diamond shopping. As if there is anything casual about it. They swiftly march the conversation on (again, oh so casually) to other topics and more drinks until this afternoon, it suddenly strikes me across the face. They went diamond shopping yesterday! I had completely forgotten about it. Sadly, they didn't find anything to their liking but I can't wait until they do and I get to chase the news down with some tequila shots.

A nommy festive weekend

I hope you all had a festive weekend! We had an impromptu dinner party on Saturday evening - those have got to be my favourite kind. Where you don't spend much time planning or cooking but everything comes together in the end. My friends brought over the smoothest, most butterlicious mashed potatoes. I made a gravy for them and am still in a food coma state. I think I have enough leftovers to last me until Christmas. Speaking of which, I can't believe Christmas is a WEEK AWAY! Are you all done with your shopping? Frenchie has been running around town trying to get it all finished before he leaves for home.

As many of you readers know, Frenchie is from the frigid north of Buffalo, New York. But to be even more specific, his hometown is 1.5 hours outside of Buffalo and sits on a lake. The Southern Tier Brewery is located in the township next door and recently, has been making leaps and strides in its brewing. It's rapidly growing its distribution area but we're still waiting for it to get down to Texas. One of my favourite memories is sitting around a bar table at the on site pub on a snowy, frigid afternoon with Frenchie and his father, nursing a cold one and just whiling the hours away. A single holiday gift idea

Why I love skiing

When the air gets nippy and the coats and scarves come out, you know it's almost time for ski season. For many, it's already started. For me, it's just a dream that I have to transform into a reality in the next few months. I've been browsing a multitude of different ski sites recently but the French Alps have really caught my attention. It's not even so much the ski slopes... okay, maybe saying "Gone skiing in France" in your voicemail would sound really hoity toity, in a fun way. But it's really due to the lodging options. The accomodations are otherworldly. Could you imagine staying in any of these fabulous ski chalets and hotels? The harder question is - could you imagine LEAVING any of these places? It'd be so difficult to convince me even go outside to do the skiing part. But by now, we all know that skiing would be just an elaborate excuse so I could lounge around in one of these wonderous places. So there's a abnormal amount of antlers, wood paneling (again!) and furs... the lap of luxury can be a tough place to be!

Family compound

Thank you all for the nice notes last week. I'm still struggling to get over whatever type cold I have and I've filed a claim with the insurance company regarding my car. Hopefully I can get all of these issues resolved this week and get on with the holidays!

My dad was a military kid and grew up in a military compound. His younger brother would always tell his parents that, when he grew up and had lots of money, he would buy a big compound where the grandparents and siblings, with all of their respective families, could live together. Well, I found that compound, although it's not large enough for our extended family. The grounds are made up of the main house, a gardener's cottage and guest house, with a lovely pool. The main house is three stories and replete with wood paneling on the ground floor. It's not that nasty faded 80's wood paneling and I actually don't mind it, as it gives the whole space a very warm and cozy feel. The third floor bedroom with the dormer windows is a little girl's dream. The open plan kitchen / dining room / kitchen would be put to good use during the holidays and I know exactly where I'd put the Christmas tree.

Well crap. On my way out of the parking garage this evening, a lady backed into my car. Sigh. My first "accident" in this car. As Frenchie reminds me though, there are plenty of things to be grateful of: a) it wasn't a bad accident - a fender bender if you can even call it that, b) I have car insurance to take care of it, even if the other lady (grr) doesn't, c) it can be fixed and d) it wasn't a bad accident and everyone is okay. I have to constantly tell myself that everyone is okay and the situation could have been a lot worse. So in a strange way, I am grateful. Thanks readers for being so patient with me through my illness this week and lack of interesting posts. And thank you Frenchie for making me tea and singing "Soft Kitty" to me while I'm sick. I will try to garner some more fun posts over the weekend and start next week anew!

I know everyone says this but I never ever win anything. Not even a dollar from a scratch off. That being said, I won the Lo & Sons giveaway from Joanna at Simple Blueprint! I know, I can't even believe it myself. I had heard about Lo & Sons bags months ago and my very own OMG bag came in the mail the other day.

I think I'm coming down with something. After braving a frigid plane ride in one of the express jets and almost getting t-boned in the taxi, I'm here in Wichita, Kansas. Which is only novel because I've never been here before. I'm starting to feel congested and unfortunately don't have any medication with me, so I've resorted to drinking hot tea, wearing sweatpants and turning the thermostat up to 79. I think I'm going to knock off early tonight but hope that you all have had a good Tuesday. Snuggle deep down and don't forget to take your vitamin c!

Braised goodness

I broke in my new dutch oven this weekend with some braised short ribs. I've never made these before and have been waiting to get the proper equipment to try it out. (Someone needs to show me how to take pictures with a camera.) In any case, it was fall-off-the-bone deliciousness and everything I hoped for. I have got to get my hands on some more recipes because there is something soul-warming about slow cooked meals on a drizzly, cold day.

Talking about bloggers with non-bloggers

I've never realized how awkward it would be to talk about my blog with my non-blogger friends. That was definitely not something I considered before taking up writing one. The first awkwardness encountered is when I bring up the fact that I have a blog.  Does one throw that into a conversation casually? I never feel like I've done it smoothly and nonchalantly (probably my first mistake). And do people then feel obligated to check it out? And if they're not interested, are you upset if they don't check in occasionally or even at all?

I was at brunch with my old college roommate, who I now only see once a year, when Frenchie proudly threw out the fact that I had a blog. My face must have just completely fallen and I could feel my cheeks burning.  I quickly recovered, blurting out, "But you don't have to read it! I just do it for fun! Please don't judge me." I didn't even give the web address, I was so mortified with what she might think. Another night, we were at a lounge (a lounge of all places, to talk about this) and an acquaintance started asking me about my blog. He, in not an unkindly way, asked me about what I write and how I get my inspiration. To which my response was a blank stare for 10 seconds and then stammered "Uhh... you know, stuff that happens during my day, cool things I find on the internet..."

Which then leads to the other awkwardness when I bring up the bloggers whom I read everyday in conversation. I'll mention "Oh my friend Shalini totally hit the nail on the head when it comes to the characters that Zooey Deschanel plays - MANIC PIXIE GIRL!" (Shalini, I hope you're not terribly offended that I called you my friend.) Or "I've met all these very unique individuals from all over the world like Joanna / Chuck / Hila." and "LMF recommended this new show Once Upon a Time, which I am so very addicted to now."  I know that some of you know more about the details of my life and my day-to-day activities than some of my closest friends.

So how have you all been able to reconcile the dichotomy and manage the blogger and non-blogger relationship?  Do you not mix the two or are they very much intertwined? And how in God's name do you make it not awkward?

Are you looking forward to the weekend? Is it going to be packed full of Christmas shopping, Christmas baking and Christmas decorating? Are you addressing and sending out your greeting cards and hanging lights and stockings? Perhaps you have a holiday party or two and are ringing in the season with friends and family.

Whichever it is, I hope you all have a wonderful one - I'll be visiting the horses tomorrow morning and going to a baby shower on Sunday. This past week, I received the above striking equestrian print from Thomas Francisco who shares my passion for horseback riding. The photograph captures a rider and horse on the way up to a jump in perfect form (I need to remember to keep my heels down), muscles tensed in anticipation of the leap and landing. The print is truly even more stunning in person and Thomas' etsy shop is chock full of good gift ideas for Christmas - I encourage you to check it out and "deck the halls" with them.

Let's take a short break from all of the Christmas fanfare, shall we?

This beautiful faux French farmhouse is actually located in one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Houston. You might not even be able to tell, except for the perfectly manicured kelly green lawn and shrubs. I like it for the hobbitness, which is the only word I could come up with to describe the barrel vault ceilings and cheerful rustic feel. This "farmhouse" goes for approximately $5 million so it has its share of grand living rooms and master bedrooms but the pictures I included below are of the more homey parts of the house. The dining room and kitchen are probably my favourite rooms in this home - can't you see Gandalf and Frodo wandering through those hallways?

So I can safely share this with you... her Christmas present!

Upon sharing this with my co-workers this morning, the immediate reaction from the gals (and guys) was - I WANT THAT! It looks so snuggly and cozy, I don't think I would ever change out of my pjs in the morning and probably wouldn't be able to make it into work either. I actually bought my mother the light grey one, but you can buy your very own here. It's something that I would want but could not bring myself to pay full price for. Perhaps when I grow up to be the crazy old cat lady, I'll shuffle around in this robe and plastic slippers with curlers in my hair, shaking my fist at teenagers and telling them to get off my lawn. I'm definitely looking forward to that day.

Tuesday inspiration

My family has a thing for vests. My grandparents, aunts and uncles, parents and my sister and I all love wearing vests in the wintertime. Maybe we think our limbs are just superfluous parts of our bodies but there's nothing that can heat up your soul like a cozy vest, leaving you free to dress or adorn your arms however you so desire. Function and freedom - what else can you ask for from clothing?

But here's the other thing, none of us look good wearing vests. We don't wear vests with cute colours, fun linings or snug and form fitting shapes. Our vests are always a swamp green or off-tan polyester smock with lots of pockets. Not just the standard two on the front. I'm talking six pockets, from your belly to your neck. No need to ever carry a purse or even keep a filing cabinet for that matter. But I don't feel bad about my fashion faux pas actually. I stay warm and secure in the knowledge that someone is walking around in this. And has paid $350 for it.

You go, guy. Way to warm your core and not give a flip what people think about it. And that, my friends, is inspirational.

O Christmas tree

This is the third Christmas tree that I've put up with Frenchie (okay, so it's the same fake tree every year) and we have slowly been adding special ornaments and a yarn / felt angel topper. The ornaments have been red and gold but this year we added tartan ribbons cascading down the sides. I'd love to have an All-American preppy Christmas. It's traditional, warm and strikes a contrast to the all white and silver tree that my parents have at their house, complete with fake icicles. Something about growing up in an Asian household excluded me from all that and I'd like to have at least one.

And yes, that's a early Christmas present you see under the tree. A Staub dutch oven! Frenchie bought it on sale over the weekend and I can't wait to braise and stew in it to my heart's content. We really need an exercise plan after this holiday season.

Here are a few snaps from my favourite holiday. My dad cooked the bird, even though he and my mom are vegetarian. He uses a different recipe every year and this year's was basted in mayo - interesting. We also used these "disposable" cloth napkins. You can buy them in rolls on amazon, wash them six times and then throw them away. I didn't think we would be using orange napkins too often. Anyway, please enjoy the pictures! I hope you all had a lovely weekend and aren't dreading the work week too terribly.

I was flipping through the pages of a magazine this evening and saw a cute monogram belt buckle design for $50 from a brand I never heard of: C. Wonder. If you're smacking your forehead in disgust at how behind I am in fashion and retail news, I want you to know that I've been known to live under a rock. Your frustration is duly noted.

Back to the belt buckle. The price and design were too preppy to pass up so I immediately popped it into my search engine and BOOM - cwonder.com. And... no e-commerce! Initially, I was confused as the magazine clearly stated that the buckle could be purchased from the website but after digging a little deeper, I also found some other interesting tidbits. The private equity firm that owns the C. Wonder brand and concept is called J. Christopher Capital. It happens to be named after its founder, one Chris Burch. Yes, as in Tory Burch's co-founder and Tory's ex-husband Chris Burch. Looking at these C. Wonder designs and products, I get just the oddest sense of deja vu. Like I've been there, seen that, worn this brand before. Hmm, must just be me...

C. Wonder's angle is to target the customers who like the geometric, bright and funky TB / Kate Spade-esque designs but want to buy them at a lower price point. What do you ladies think? Is this a store you're definitely going to have to check out, especially once they start e-tailing in a month or two, do your loyalties lie with Tory, or are you sick of seeing these "prepster" type products everywhere? And if you've been to the store in Soho, please share!

Sister sister weekend

There's nothing like some sister time over the weekend to set me back on track. I started the weekend in a slight frenzy, trying to make it to West Elm in time to grab some tableware for Thanksgiving. After fighting through some terrible traffic, we got to the store right before it closed. I grabbed the very last large "Wish" plate (see previous blog entry).

Siri had a work event in town this weekend and stopped by on Saturday evening. Frenchie and I mixed up a beef and red wine stew of our own concoction and I practiced baking dinner rolls, which they both sampled. We all spent the rest of Saturday night lounging around and watching hilarious movies. My sister is planning on baking the family favourites for Thanksgiving - pumpkin and custard pies. She makes a deliciously flaky homemade crust but is a super procrastinator so we typically end up baking until the wee hours of the morning. I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with her - playing iPad games, watching Always Sunny and the Cowboys and making fun of mom together. Are you guys going to spend some quality time with someone this week? Do you have any Thanksgiving traditions that you share with them?

I've got the itch to go on vacation somewhere. Maybe it's because I haven't done an international trip this year or taken any more time off than a few days, but I want to get out of town and go see stuff. At work, my co-workers and I have been sending around different ski resorts and tropical spas but the Carnaval de Quebec was the one that really caught my eye. This year it is held between Jan 27 and Feb 12 and features snow slides, dog sledding, fireworks displays, sleigh rides, three different parades and so many more activities. Excessive food and excessive fun? I'm in. Every year, Frenchie and I promise each other that we are going to vacation somewhere warmer. But it's tough not be in the holiday spirit after seeing these winter wonderland pictures.

Could this be cured by going to a good Christmas festival somewhere?

My dear friends that I've referred to in previous posts are having their first baby and I have been invited to their baby shower! This is the first "friend" shower that I've been to and I'm a complete and utter n00b. We checked out several places they've registered but, as she's already had three showers thrown for her, most of the items on her registry are already gone. This in and of itself is okay as myself and a few of our other close friends are going to go in on a present together. We decided on a car seat - easy enough, I thought. I was sadly mistaken.

For instance, did you know that:

You need a "base" along with the car seat. Apparently the seat itself is not adequate to hold the baby as you go barreling through the suburbs. Also, you should buy TWO bases, for both you and your spouse's cars. The bases, that I saw, were $85 each. EACH!
A car seat can fit onto a stroller. However, you may not want the stroller that fits with the car seat so you would then need a separate stroller

Side note on strollers - If you plan on jogging or running with your baby in a stroller, you can (if you are so inclined or if someone is kind enough to gift you one) get a B.O.B. It's a $500 stroller. Just for jogging. It also has a seat that can detach and fit into another "base" that can go into your car. Of which you probably want two. Does it ever end?!

Car seats apparently don't grow along with your child so this first one we buy will only last for a few months. My friends will then need to switch to a different car seat. I am unclear on whether or not you need to switch bases as well

Is Thanksgiving a big family get together at your house? It is at mine and we've always had family and friends come over and squeeze around the table until we literally cannot fit any more. I'd like to have some semblance of a Thanksgiving-themed table setting this year, keeping in mind that the table surface will be crowded with food. This will be the first year my family will have done anything like this. Below are a few holiday table inspirations I found on the internets! Any easy and cheap decorating tips that you'd like to share?

I like Real Simple's simple red ribbon and placemats paired with print napkins - this can easily be translated into a Thanksgiving colour scheme

A bold coloured napkin amongst a white tablecloth and white dishes also makes a statement - although you'd have to make sure your servingware can fit with the theme as well

Maybe a glint of gold among your typical orange and browns? (PS - The plates are at West Elm and are on SALE!)

These floating candles are easy and the glass pebbles could be changed for different colours

I love it when houses surprise you. This beautiful home sits on an expansive 20,000 square foot lot across from Rice University, which in and of itself accounts for the $2.4 million price tag. The house's unassuming exterior, although on a lush green lawn, is nothing stupendous. And I actually don't care much for the interior, which you can view here. But check out this great room. Doesn't it feel like you're in an upside down ship? If I lived in this home, I would just live in this room.

Last night, Frenchie and I spent over an hour trying to pick Christmas cards for this year. Yes, I said OVER an hour. We hemmed and hawed over 10 options that I've been accumulating since September. And we still haven't reached a decision. I have been through 150 pages of etsy to no avail. We're looking for something modern but not cold, festive but not campy, unique but not too expensive. That's not too much to ask, right? Last year I actually bought four different sets because I couldn't make up my mind and ended up using just about all of them. When rhinos fly

Bringing you a little bit of whimsy this Tuesday...I saw this via the shortlist yesterday and thought there was no way it could be real. The endangered black rhinos are asleep and being flown via helicopter to a secret location in South Africa. Surprisingly, this is a more humane way to transport the rhinos, as they are asleep for a shorter period of time.

This has been one of the nicest weather weekends that we have had in awhile here in Texas. A bit chilly in the mornings but warming up to a comfortable high 70s in the afternoon. I also went riding for the first time in ages and found a wonderful riding vest to wear on those brisk mornings. I haven't been since July and it was really nice to see all my old riding buddies again and hear what they've been up to. My trainer had neglected to mention that she got ENGAGED in August and was flaunting a ruby rock for her engagement ring. Her wedding is going to be next August in the beautiful Estes Park at Marys Lake, Lodge and Resort which looks so incredibly picturesque. For those of you who know your Stephen King lore, the Stanley Hotel is also in Estes Park (I've never actually been) but thank goodness she's not having her wedding there. I couldn't imagine attending a wedding reception in a haunted ballroom, and you all know I already have a really hard time with hotel rooms.

So the question du jour, which has nothing to do with anything from this past weekend, is... have you ever stayed in a haunted hotel?

There are multiple awesome things about this home. The pool, the "zen" garden, the multitude of windows, the master bedroom bathtub and beautiful bedrooms. But the best thing is the great room on the second floor. The rafters really make the space - I think I would live in that room alone if I owned this house. You could scoot all the furniture to the side, throw up a disco ball and party the night away as well.

Foiled yet again! Work has now blocked pinterest because it has been labeled as a "social networking" site. How dare they! I guess I'll add it to the list of other places I can't visit while at work, including but not limited to: youtube, facebook, any external email site and tumblr. Sigh... now I'll have to resort to blogging with pictures back at home between the hours of midnight and one am.

Good morning to you from NYC! There's some SNOW on the ground here - I can't believe it's only October and some places in the Northeast got a foot of snow this weekend. I haven't even pulled my winter stuff out of the closet, guys. Frenchie's grandmother slipped on the ice outside her home on Sunday and broke her ankle. She's in a walking boot now and we are all wishing for her speedy recovery. I sure hope that this isn't an indication of what we're in for this winter.

This weekend, I went to a lovely birthday dinner for one of my friends and saw the best Halloween costume (Black Swan - the eye makeup was GENIUS). How come I can never come up with clever ideas like that? And last night, I checked in late and scared myself silly until close to 2 am (those Paranormal Activity 3 trailers did not help). I spent half the night sleeping with the lights on in the hotel room and half expecting to see some dark figure looming over my bed. I need to stop watching documentaries on haunted hotels. Needless to say, I'm tired but in the Halloween spirit! Have a fun time trick or treating if you're going tonight and stay warm.

I am such a Halloweenie. I have never had a successful Halloween costume and I pretty much get 'analysis paralysis' when it comes to picking a costume. Will it be clever but cute? Smart yet sexy? Can one person be all of those things on Halloween??? The PRESSURE - it's TOO MUCH.

So maybe I'm taking the holiday a little too seriously. I haven't even thought about what I'll be doing this weekend.* It definitely doesn't involve a costume - I know, what a Halloweenie. Tranquility and serenity are what I'm looking for today. Do you like the sharp angles and straight lines of this Cotswold style house? The current owners spiced up the interior with their own taste and touch, which I'll let you decide for yourself if you like or not. I rather like seeing others' interpretations on living spaces and I don't know if I could be quite as creative or thoughtful. What do you guys think - could you live with the modern update or do you prefer something a little more old fashioned?

But I think this breakfast area keeps it from being too stark and modern

The master bedroom is pretty nice but what I like is this adjoining study / sitting area. I'm also a big fan of the big canvases strewn throughout this home

This weekend, I test drove SIRI. SIRI told me where to find the nearest Redbox, what movies were available there, how much time was left before I could take my pumpkin cheesecake out of the oven and the distance that Frenchie ran on Saturday morning. SIRI gave me suggestions on the best type of workout pants and running shoes to buy and the time of the Cowboys game on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, SIRI got tired of being my personal assistant and told me to shove it when I asked her to carry all of the groceries into the house. I then proceeded to tell her that SIRI does whatever her master commands. We went on like this for 10 minutes until my mom yelled "IRIS and ROOTH, stop bickering and bring the food in the house this instant!"

Fall forgetfulness

It was a beautifully balmy fall weekend in Texas and Frenchie and I finally went to go visit my parents and sister. We were trying to schedule around rush hour traffic and sneak out of work right after lunch time on Friday, which didn't work too well as my work world pretty much exploded on Friday afternoon (different story). I hurried home as soon as I could and threw all of my things together and we set off for the four hour car ride, which wouldn't put us at my parents' house until near midnight. Well, wouldn't you know it, as we pull up to the front of my parents' home, I realized that I left my overnight bag in Houston. All of the clothes I had planned to wear for the entire weekend, my phone and blackberry charger, my extra shoes and all of my toiletries. The only thing I was smart enough to grab, which will show you where my priorities lie, was my work computer bag.

Lucky for me, my mom, sister and I are generally around the same size so it worked out alright in the end. Except for the fact that I had ridiculously worn my fur-lined boots, which were the only shoes I had for the entire 80-degree weather weekend. T-shirt, shorts and snow boots. You live and learn, I guess.

I just got back from a fine dining experience with senior work colleagues where I ate too little and drank too much. So, naturally, I'm back at home now, sitting on the living room floor eating cold queso out of the jar with my fingers.

Buffalo thrills

Oil and water.

Beer and liquor.

Hippies and yuppies.

Toddlers and permanent markers.

Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys fans.

All of these things do not get along. However, contrary to the trend, Frenchie is originally from Buffalo and is hence a Bills fan, whereas I am from Dallas and a Cowboys fan. Since we've been dating, the two teams have not met... until this fall. The game in November will test the strength of our relationship and probably my patience if the Boys don't fare well. Is it bad form to punch your boyfriend in the face if he's taunting you? I may or may not have slapped him before because I caught him skipping to the end of a book. Maybe he should wear a football helmet when we watch the game.

Although I couldn't stand anymore Bills paraphernalia or sports gear, it's actually a bit difficult to deny the rustic Americana draw of the buffalo. I might be okay with some of these items around the house.

No matter how gorgeous the "fall" weather is outside, nothing can tear me away from marinating on the couch and allowing my brain to turn into mush
Making mussels is easy! That said, I bought them pre-washed and debearded. And cleaning up after making mussels is hard. I practically disinfected every kitchen surface afterward. It is kinda cool seeing some of the little guys open and close before you boil them to death
My laziness trumps practically everything. After my culinary foray into shellfish, I then spent the entire weekend eating Totino's Pizza Rolls. Yes, they have trans fat and no, I don't really mind. It takes less than a minute to nuke them in the microwave and they are delicious
It's Christmas time already. No joke. This weekend all the Christmas decorations and lights went up at the shopping centers around town. In the 90 degree weather. Boo

We have a twisted sense of weather here in Texas (okay, so this isn't exactly a revelation). Frenchie and I thought, since it's mid-October, why don't we go play tennis in the sun dappled afternoon? Bad idea - it wasn't cool and breezy at all and my face exploded into a sweaty, angry red tomato due to the heat (and also not being in shape)

I'd love to hear about all your lovely weekends - I'm especially jealous about the corn mazes that people are visiting. I really want to do that! Or is it one of those things that sounds like a better idea than it actually is?

A house divided

I love everything about this house. I love that there's a main house with two bedrooms and the 500 square foot guest house with two bedrooms. It's big enough for me and Frenchie. I love the amount of natural light that streams in through the living room windows but also the fact that the lot is surrounded by large, mature trees. I love how the current owners have decorated and furnished the home. The main house is only 1,150 square feet and they have kept everything very simple, tasteful and smart. I love how there are not superfluous living areas and I'm daydreaming about the meals / projects / drinks that we could have gathered around a rough hewn dining room table. I love the gravel outdoor entertaining area in the backyard and the large windows to the guest house. I think I must have a fascination with guest houses but that's only because I someday hope that I'll be able to have my friends and family come visit or stay with me for an extended amount of time. I could also use it as a writer's studio when it's unoccupied (okay, now I'm really dreaming).

My parents are cooler than me

Since my trip to Los Angeles, I haven't seen my family and it has been a long time since I've gone home as well. With the cooler temperatures and upcoming Halloween holiday, I thought that this would be the perfect weekend for some family time - you know, carve pumpkins and bake some Halloween cookies. Frenchie suggested that I call my parents earlier to let them know that we were planning on going back but I shrugged him aside. I reminded him that my parents are old folks - they wouldn't have any plans for the weekend.

Well, I emailed them today and my dad casually reminded me that they were going to be out of town this weekend. And going to Vegas! Dad was so sneaky about it too. He told me they were going to "Utah" and sent me their itinerary - which had them flying into Utah and then driving to Vegas. I'm on to you, parents! I know your tricks! If they hit the jackpot, they better fly me out there for the celebration bash. Don't you think they will??

Read and wear: Ready Player One

Disclaimer: I think this may be one of my favourite books that I've read this year. Ready Player One is set in the not-so-distant future, where the world has depleted its natural resources, and the population has escaped by immersing itself in a simulation environment for work, entertainment and social interaction. The creator of the simulation world, otherwise known as OASIS, has died and left his billions to the winner of a game that he has hidden inside the OASIS. The main character of the novel is Wade, an orphaned 18 year old and an OASIS fanatic, who is in the hunt to win the grand prize. The game, as you could expect, turns very real and very dangerous as Wade's simulation and real world become intertwined.

Not to geek you out but this book contains tons of Dungeons and Dragons, Star Wars and gaming terminology. I found it to be incredibly entertaining and enjoyable despite not understanding all of those references. There's also an unavoidably creepy parallel that one could draw to Steve Jobs' death last week as well. Geek, nerd or neither, the story is action packed and I highly recommend you pick it up. The movie rumors on this one have already begun.
