EOW No. 12
Hiya folks! We’re back from our road trip vacation (a whirlwind) and jumping back into the swing of things. Work and the grind have been unrelenting and heaven knows that this summer hasn’t really felt like “summer” but I’m also glad to be back. I’ll do a separate post on our “summer vacation” in this COVID environment, however for now, I thought I’d share some of the cool / fun things I’ve discovered that may put you in the right mindset for the weekend. Stay cool and stay safe!
Books and Boba - New podcast discovery! Books and Boba is a podcast that reads / discusses books by authors of Asian descent. I’ve always chosen to read books that have sounded interesting to me but hadn’t intently focused much on the gender / background of the author. This podcast is helping to diversify my to-read list and discover other stories that are out there. The following is a sampling of some of the books the podcast has covered that I also recommend: Monstress by Marjorie Liu, The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higoshino, Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki, and Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata.
Felix Modern - This San Antonio stationer can have all of my money. My list of to-buy items from this store is super long and there are quite a few things that they carry that make excellent gifts as well. Some of my favourites are shown below:
Smoked queso - I’m cheating a bit as this was part of our summer vacation but we made smoked queso and it was just about as delicious as you would expect it to be. For you young kids out there, you may have seen the different TikTok videos of people throwing together these tins of magic and bubbling them in the smoker for a few hours. Indeed, we didn’t use a recipe but threw together the following in aluminum foil tins:
Cubed block cheese - Around two blocks of whatever your favourite cheese is, we used cheddar and pepperjack
Cream cheese - We used 16 oz
Taco meat - A package of ground beef browned in a skillet with taco spices
Jalapenos (fresh from the garden)
Two cans of diced tomatoes
You can also throw other ingredients in (bell peppers, mushrooms, and onions come to mind). We put it all in the smoker for around 2 hours (until the top started to look golden brown) and it was SO tasty. If you’re interested in an actual recipe you can follow, I’ve found a link here: https://www.thefoodhussy.com/traeger-smoked-queso/.
