How is it still summer?

"Will this heat ever end?!" asks Dalton probably

I don’t know about y’all but this summer has felt like forever.  July seems to have taken up half the year.  It’s probably the interminable heat, the fact that every day seems exactly the same (sun, more sun, and no rain), and the small contributor of not planning ahead and making any vacation plans.  Our vegetable garden in the backyard has stopped producing because of lack of water and the lawn is turning a burnished golden colour.  All those beautiful caprese salads y’all are eating right now?  Apparently in Texas, those are only homegrown meals that happen during the shoulder seasons.  Anyway, it’s still summer and we’re still sweaty so I’m going to keep blogging about random things.

Out of sheer boredom, I ordered a mini donut pan off Amazon to bake some donuts.  The thought process goes like this: “I like eating cake donuts. I bet I could bake some cake donuts and then eat most of them.”  Turns out the reason I like cake donuts is because it’s FRIED CAKE.  Regardless, I made two different batches of baked mini donuts which turned out tasty (although not too much like my beloved cake donuts).  Here are the two recipes I tried for blueberry glazed and lemon pound cake mini donuts - go bonkers.

Bryan found out about Liquid IV on a bachelor party weekend this summer, which is how I know it’s good insofar as providing hydration.  It’s a powder electrolyte supplement that makes your water taste like a Gatorade.  We bought the lemon lime flavour from the grocery store but they have a variety of different flavours and I’m told you can buy this at Costco.  I chugged three cups of water with one packet of the powder after riding both horses one evening and felt immediately better.  One note, one serving does have 11 grams of sugar so maybe dilute it over multiple servings of water.

This has been covered ad nauseum in every single forum but why is it so damned difficult to get women’s pants / shorts / athletic wear with respectable pockets?  Before you ask “why do you have to carry your phone everywhere,” I will tell you as a person who has fallen in the woods, on a secret, unmarked trail, and NOT been able to get up, I now take my phone everywhere with me.  At least finding a pair of breeches with a cellphone pocket is getting easier these days but athletic shorts?  I’ve been looking for running shorts with a cellphone pocket all summer long.  I bought the Lululemon Align shorts, which have pockets aplenty.  But one can not live off of bike shorts alone.  Something without compression please?  I have a few pairs coming in the mail and will report back on the success (or lack thereof).

Stay cool and stay sane during this forever summer.

  1. Ugh I feel you on the neverending summer, and I'm not even in Texas 🥵 Jen from cobjockey got me turned on to LMNT - it's a sugar free electrolyte powder. Definitely took a little adjustment to what felt like drinking salty margarita mix (I started with lime lol) but it definitely has been helping my recovery times in our disgusting weather without adding extra sugars!

  2. Gurrrrl....I can totally relate about the whole pocket thing! I've resorted to using a belt bag after my daughter gave me the idea. I need my phone, gosh darn it! And as someone who loves summer, I actually think it's going by too fast! LOLZ
    Stay cool, Ruth:)

    2. The one I'm using is just a simple nylon one that my husband has had for a long time:) It would be nice to get a decent leather one though...

  4. yes summer is the cruelest month (April be damned) It is now 99 percent humidity here after we did get some rain. Which is great except the whole outside smells like a rancid damp sponge. Yummy right? I love my Buckwild breeches they have a huge pocket on the leg and it works so well AND they are so comfy it is like wearing sweats (Not that you want to wear them now LOL). Hope you get a break soon and it doesnt monsoon on you like it did us. UGH. Laughing at your donuts NOT FRIED story :)

    1. One thing that we've missed out on because of lack of rain is LESS flies and mosquitoes... silver lining?

  5. Dalton's face seems to sum it up really well. Totally agree it is never ending, I am so torn between wanting to plan things and not wanting to die in the heat.

    1. Yep, every time I get out to the sweltering, stuffy barn I'm like - ah yes, this is why we're taking it easy this summer

  6. AB asked me less than two hours ago how much longer it is going to be hot for. I said at least eight weeks. Maybe it will get to a respectable 88* by October 1st.
