The run I didn't go on

via here
I was super jazzed to be running on the coastal trails today with my coworker from SF.  The weather was just about perfect for a run - sunny, cool and slightly breezy.  We parked the car near Crissy Field and started jogging.  About 15 feet.  And then, in front of me loomed I-swear-to-god 500 steps.  Which apparently was the first of many.  What I thought would be an easy jog on even trails became a treacherous hike up and down stairs, dodging fallen trees, rocks and avoiding divots that were just looking to twist your ankle.  My lungs burned and I huffed and puffed upward while my coworker hopped up and down the stairs like a jack rabbit with seemingly endless energy.

I now know that this trail is called Batteries to Bluffs in the Presidio and hiked pretty regularly.  But my legs are KILLING me and I can barely stand up.  Who knew that I had to train to go see a Pacific Ocean view in San Francisco but I definitely should have.

  1. wow, good on you! I can't run due to an injury I sustained a few years ago and I miss it so much. I love to be outdoors, just free! And the scenery you guys have - wow, stunning.

  4. It looks beautiful for a nice walk. I would have given up on the first sight of a stair ;)

  5. I get a similar feeling when running with my husband: I feel like a desperate hamster on a wheel while he gracefully and gazelle like runs next to me. In my defense, he's been at this a lot longer than me (I'm not even a year into running)

  6. I hear about people running in San Fran up and down all those crazy hills...I have no idea how they do it. Maybe it's just because I've never trained for such things (nor have I ever wanted to). My legs would have been burning too.

  8. Oooh how funny, I may had simply collapsed after 7 minutes. It is def a HUGE WORKOUT that one had to built up to it (training aarrgghhh!). I rather enjoy the view via a walk or car ride .. haha! I vacaed last year in San Fran (I am from NY) and JUST walkign around 'touring' was a WORKOUT! Congrats for going for it! Now treat yourself to some yummies ... ice-cream perhaps!

  11. Stair runs are brutal! I'm impressed you ran it though, and you should be proud of yourself!

  12. Don't worry, I probably would have been the same, with aching muscles!

  13. Oh no! Now rest those aching muscles of yours and get better soon

  14. Hahaha, sorry, I don't mean to laugh, but I can just picture myself even attempting to do this. I can't run. This would kill me. Really. Good for you to do it! I've been in San Francisco many times, and boy, I don't think I could ever be a cyclist or a runner over there.
