New Hampshire by Howard Moss

The weather is inching down maybe 10 degrees this weekend... hardly even a taste of fall, much less winter.  However, we deserve a little taste of what's to come and I'm sure it will be here soon enough.

New Hampshire
By Howard Moss

1
When the loons cry,
The night seems blacker,
The water deeper.

Across the shore:
An eyelash-charcoal
Fringe of pine trees.

2
The lake reflects
Indefinite pewter,

And intermittent thunder
Lets us know

The gods are arriving,
One valley over.

3
After the long
Melancholy of the fall,
One longs for the crisp
Brass shout of winter—

The blaze of firewood,
The window’s spill
Of parlor lamplight
Across the snow.

4
Flaring like a match
Dropped in a dry patch,
One sunset tells
The spectrum’s story.

See the last hunter’s
Flashlight dim
As he hurries home

To his lighted window.

  1. I have so much I could say about how I long for a winter like this, but "Across the shore:/An eyeglass charcoal/Fringe of pine trees."

Out if respect for you and the author, I'm pretending to have no comment about "when the loons cry"!

  5. ^I agree with Katrin. I'm so happy for a reprieve because I know there is a bit of summer left around these parts.

  8. Wonderful poem Ruth. I can't believe how fast this year is going - let alone the summer. I'm enjoying the slight coolness from the normally excessive heat on this side of the world ;)

  9. I was talking to a client from Austin the other day and he mentioned that they were getting a cold snap down there an it might go from 100+ to the 80s. Yikes! I've already been using the heater in my car in the mornings and I'm so happy about it. :)
