Grey skies forever

While middle America is getting pounded by snow, the only thing we have had in Texas is cold rain.  Again.  The colour scheme of January is grey and brown but without the twinkling lights of the holidays.  We pulled all of the holiday decorations during the one sunny day we've had so far this year and now everything seems incredibly bare.  Even the rosemary cone I kept inside for Christmas decided that it's had enough of winter and is slowly in the process of giving up the ghost to the cold and the gloom.

The dog - being the dog - pays no mind to the mud or the cold, splashing wildly in the puddles we find at the park and liberally coating himself with muck.  White dog becomes grey on a daily basis and I mercilessly hose him off outside in the front yard.  Don't worry you worry about him freezing his furry buns, the spoiled brat gets tucked in with a fleece blanket every night in his bed.

The horse is fuzzy, despite our erratic blanketing, her long coat perfect for picking up mud when the herd does get turned out.  The paddocks are a swamp and her blanket used to be navy blue, I think, but is now just brown.  In our grooming process, I completely skip over brushing out her tail which is tangled with dried mud.  Rolling - it's her favourite.

I recently remarked to Bryan that we've lived in our house longer in cold weather than warm weather.  I've almost forgot what it's like to get eaten by mosquitoes in our backyard.  Instead we shuffle around indoors in the coziest of house slippers and are constantly sipping our collection of tea.  Occasionally that morphs into a hot toddy or rum & hot cocoa on the chilliest of nights.  I'm in static-laden layers constantly.

When I'm not outside cleaning animals, I've resigned myself to curling up on the couch with a book and a blanket, eating shortbread cookies.  Or cleaning the house of dog hair.  Rinse and repeat routine I'm ready for spring.

I suppose this is the true season for embracing hygge.  How do you all stay warm in the winter time without eating all the cheese?

  1. Yeah without snow winter is not very glamorous. We have been having some really nice sunny days here in Florida but we have way more gray, rainy days than normal this winter.

  2. I am like you - slippers tea/coffee/toddys/cocoa + blanket after blanket. That being said SoCal isn't as cold as NorCal where I had one small space heater for my room only. I still refuse to run any heat though.

  3. our heat hasnt been working right so we have that too. Mark and I bought electric throws for our couch and boy do we love them. So do the dogs. Ollie jumps in each of our laps to see which one has their blanket on and settles there....lol not a dumb pup him.

and all my blankets are grey or brown now from the mud even the purple ones. I have two brand new purple plaid sheets for Remus and Tate and they sit here in the kitchen because the mud UGH. I bought them in like OCTOBER?? UGH....

i am cold as hell all the time. I just want to curl into a fetal ball. And sleep. OR eat. Whichever works for me. Trying to get motivated to start working out again and nope not doing it LOL!

    1. Electric blanket and warm dog? Sounds like a winning combo. I just bought a new turnout blanket for Mae but am holding it in reserve for next season. I'm writing this one off.

I've been eating everything in sight. It's frightening actually.

  5. LOL....grey Bowie....hehe...but yeah....keeping warm in winter is a challenge. I'm always cold even in summer so Dec to March is like Game Of Thrones winter bone-chilling cold for me. Let's just eat all the cheese!

  6. It just keeps snowing here. Endlessly. Baking, crafting, netflix while wrapped in blankets, puzzles, books, the usual. Sadly, I have to drag myself outside into the horrible weather to deal with the horses.

  7. Slippers are a must when your floors aren't carpet. I've got this amazing house coat thing from my MIL that I love wearing. It doesn't get super duper cold here most of the time though so the coat is a biiiit on the warm side but that works well for me. Lol

  8. Sounds like your winter is our "mud season" (aka, spring). Good luck getting through it!

Hygge for me is crafting (knitting, sewing, etc.) or painting the walls (yay!). With lots and lots of tea.
