EOW No. 21

Hey ho, spring is over and we’re already in the middle of summer.  All of a sudden, the temps have skyrocketed into the 90s and everyone is sweating.

Last weekend, I was able to escape the insane temps for a quick trip to wine country.  It was a work event, and I thought for a brief second about signing up all my coworkers for a horseback ride through the vineyards.  You’re welcome, work people, for not putting you through that when you were all hungover.  It was the first horse-less weekend I’ve had all year, so I had to make it up by going for a run around the vineyards and doing a core workout and was subsequently sore for half a week afterward.  Physical fitness, sigh.  It never ends.

I ran to the end of a street for this picture. Why do I live in Texas again?

Unsurprisingly, after a weekend in wine country and two wine tastings, I’m burnt out on wine.  By Saturday afternoon, everything started to taste like heavy dried dates and I had to call it quits.  I did have the foresight to order a pack of bitters - Angostura and orange - so I’m making this the summer of cocktails.  I have a few mezcal cocktail recipes that I can’t wait to try out and shall report back on the winners.

One of the best things that I ate last weekend in Napa (and I ate quite a few good things) was beet salad.  At both restaurants we went to for dinner, the beet salad was a popular option and really tasty.  It seems that people either really love or really hate beets.  We never ate them growing up so didn’t come into adulthood with a preconceived notion of hating them (same with brussels sprouts).  In any case, I’d love to try this beet salad recipe this summer and see how many beet converts I can make.

Tell me what you’ve been up to lately.  Are you sweating as much as I am or do you live in a normal part of the country?

  1. well not sweating the last two days as we had a 45 degree weather drop since Sat (Yes it is in the 50s again today). That scenery at Napa is GORGEOUS if i were you i would have set up a tent under the vineyard and set up camp and stayed. :) I am not a beet person but have had beet salad and yes it is good. Glad you didnt have too much wine after all :)

  3. Good job with the ab workout Rooth, I'm proud of you! And the beet salad sounds delicious as well! I'm not a wine drinker at all and usually I don't like drinking wine. Except for a rosé or sweet white wine. Xx

  4. Yes beets and brussels sprouts are kind of polarizing like that. I actually like both but I do watch it with beets because they have a high sugar content. That salad does sound delish! The weather in NYC has been unseasonably warm this Spring as well. I don't mind the warm weather but I hope this doesn't mean that a sweltering summer lies ahead. We have managed to resist turning on our AC so far though ;p

I have the Ann and Tomboy shirts from Sezane and they are very well made and hold up to washing. They run TTS.
