Happy New Year!

Happy Lunar New Year - it's the year of the pig, which also happens to be my year!  Since I was a wee babe (oink!), my mom would buy decorative pig figurines for me, representing my birth year.  If you were born in years 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, and 2019, you were born in the year of the pig.

Since I ended the "old" year by dropping a brand new phone on its face and shattering the screen the day after I got it, I am hoping that is the end of the juju and we are on to bigger and better things.  For those of you who weren't quite prepared for January 2019, this is your chance to start over again, as well as stuff yourself silly with Chinese / Vietnamese / Korean / and other Asian food.

In their lunar horoscope, Elle.com says about the year of the Earth Pig that we'll be inspired to collect friends from every walk of life, which to me is never a wrong way to widen your social circle.  Although I've found that it's harder to make friends as adults and there are always loads of excuses as to why, making the effort to do so is typically rewarding.  I'm joining a book club in a few weeks in the hopes of meeting new people and reading some good books.  In addition pig years can be rather hedonistic.  Interpret that however you'd like.  Elle recommends methods on ways to temper hedonism but why not celebrate when you can?  Spring is the time for birthdays in our family and I, for one, am looking forward to baking and eating lots of cake the next few months.

Refinery29 says that if you were born in the year of the pig, you can expect to put in some grunt (ha!) work this year.  Quite frankly, I'd be more surprised if a horoscope told me that I could just coast for the remainder of the year.  When is the lunar new year for that coming around?

CNN advises you to keep lots of plants in the northern center of your home to ward off bad luck.  Also to travel to the northwest and places in the middle of a country.  Does keeping a dead money tree in the guest bedroom count?  Or if the plant dies, does that mean that the bad luck will come in 2x power?  We'll definitely be traveling to the Pacific Northwest twice this year - once to ski and once for my sister's wedding.

January has seemed like a long month in 2019 already - so far we've polar vortexed, three babies were born, we meh'd the Super Bowl, and I've done what feels like an entire year's worth of work.  However spring is right around the corner and sitting on the brink of that season, I feel like everything is on the upswing.

Also if anyone wants to celebrate the year of the pig with a cracking carnitas recipe, this one is my absolute favourite

  1. Happy New Year! There have been fireworks and new years parties galore over here--the parties are fun, but having a baby crying throughout the night has given me new feeling about fireworks from midnight till 2 a.m..... :P
My baby sister and Cyrus are both year of the Dog and she spent most of the last year talking about how excited she was that the two of them have the same animal, haha!
