On yard work

via here

I did something today that I haven't done in ages.  I mowed a lawn.  In our teenage years, my sister and I dreaded having to mow.  Our parents live in a cul-de-sac and our backyard seemed boundless.  Couple that with the blazing Texas heat and voracious fire ants and we would reluctantly drag our feet out to cut the ever-growing grass.  Since I've moved out of my parents' house, I've only lived in apartment complexes and counted myself lucky to not have a lawn to mow.  But today is Father's Day and should be dad's day off.  And surprisingly, mowing the lawn was actually quite relaxing, if you can ignore the whirring of the motor and the smell of exhaust.  There's something almost Zen-like about carving straight lines into the lawn, plodding along methodically and steadily.  Marching up and down the yard, trailed by the smell of grass clippings, this is definitely one thing that I associate with summertime.

Happy Dad's Day!

  2. I wish I had a John Deere riding mower. At least mine is self-propelled. The push ones are torture.

  5. Great minds think alike? I also mowed the lawn! The pollen count is like off-the-scale so it wasn't the most relaxing experience but it's quite satisfying to see your handiwork when it's done!

  9. What a sweet Father's Day present! I can't stand mowing either. I used to have to do it growing up too! *Sigh* But I'm sure your dad appreciated it (I don't think dad's care for mowing much either)

  10. My dad always used to make me mow the lawn when I was younger, even though I hated it ;) What a great gift to give your dad!

  11. You know, one plus of mowing the lawn is that awesome summer smell. Or maybe I'm just a whack job.
I must say, though, that I don't blame you for not being a fan of that job, especially in the heat of Texas in summer!

  12. We have a neighbor who loves to mow the lawn. He gets what he calls "all Forrest Gumpy about it." For years he mowed our front yard and just with in the last two summers handed it back over to my husband. How funny is that? We have another neighbor who recently became a single mom, and he and my husband take turns mowing her lawn, and this summer is the summer my son learns to mow. Fun times!

  14. That was a sweet gesture, I know your dad appreciated it. As an adult, I do some of my best thinking while trailing behind the lawn mower. Growing up, I did too much yard work and really didn't want a yard of my own. But it's worked out for the best.
