A Creepy Christmas Carol

One of the great Christmas classics, in my opinion, either read or watched is A Christmas Carol.  I had forgotten how touching this story was and after watching it tonight, I kind of teared up a little bit at the end when Scrooge becomes the embodiment of Christmas spirit all year round.  However, amongst the more awkward things I noticed about A Christmas Carol this year...

Ever realize how creepy Anthony Walters playing Tiny Tim is in the 1984 tv movie of A Christmas Carol?  They may have over done the movie makeup because poor Tiny Tim looks like a young Edward Cullen.  Except scary.  And he kept saying "And God bless us every one" at the most awkward moments.  It's as if he couldn't remember his cue and just jumped into the dialogue wherever he could fit it in.  Poor kid.

"Look here!  Beneath my robe!"  Has it never bothered anyone that the Ghost of Christmas Present, a bearded, robust and (admittedly) hairy man has two starving children (Want and Ignorance) hidden beneath his robe?  I think this has always bothered me at some level, even at a young age - partially because the children are always portrayed as scary, starving urchins but secondly because they're hidden beneath his robe!

Now that I've sufficiently creeped you out with a Christmas tradition, what are some other oddities around this time of year that you've noticed?

  1. I LOVE A Christmas Carol!!! Even the Mickey and Mister Magoo versions. Scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmas' long, long ago. :)

My favorite is the 1938 version. It's not very faithful to the original, but I have my reasons for prefering it. The George C. Scott version is excellent.

I'm glad it's not just me, that whole under-the-rode thing is creepy...and the kids are scary. Interesting that Dickens made the boy Ignorance (with doom on his forehead) and the girl Want.

  2. That bit about looking beneath the robe has always made me giggle, it's like he's a flasher or something. My favourite version is, of course, the Muppet Christmas Carol. Except, the bit when Scrooge goes to use the door knocker and it's actually his long dead partners face and it starts yelling at him - that bit always scared me so much that I had to cover my eyes. I just checked, and I was nine when that film came out. How sad is that?

  10. ha! i don't watch that version but i do remember the christmas present guy reminding me too much of a combo of kenny rogers and burt reynolds - which totally doesn't read charles dickens to me.

a christmas carol is one of my all-time favorite stories though (i tear up too).

  13. That photo is terrifying! I have to confess that I have never read the book or seen the movie (what kind of English Major am I?!?!?) but you have inspired me to make this one of my holiday goals. If only to witness both of these creepy features.

  15. Hehehe. That IS creepy. I haven't seen it in a while. Now when I do I'm more likely to be scared than filled with Christmas spirit...

  16. Haha, oh wow!... It's been ages since I have last seen the original version of The Christmas Carol. I didn't remember how weird it was, but after you mentioned it... and provided PROOF... haha, yes. Very creepy, indeed! Now I think I will have to go watch it again. :)

  17. I've never seen this before. Never thought some Christmas characters could end up so creepy :) Where I am at the moment, I didn't find any oddities except for the amount of food and Christmas dinner scenes shown on TV commercials. Maybe it has always been like that and I'm the one that's odd as I haven't watched TV for years.

  18. Yesss! Such an absolute classic! I'm so glad there are still people in this world who appreciate the oldies and aren't too obsessed with the recent ABC Fam movies. Just sayin'. ;)
