EOW No. 5

Does anyone else feel like the holidays have just jumped up and smacked them in the face?  Our friends have lights on their house already (!!!) and the first tree is also up in our office.  Starbucks launched their Christmas cups this week as well.  I’m not complaining about holiday cheer but I do feel so ill prepared for it all.  Thanksgiving menu planning, Christmas shopping, holiday decorating - it’s all on my to do list and obviously none of it has been done.  I foresee some furious online shopping in my future.

Not holiday decor but I love this sign from Ace General Store
One of the items we’re looking to knock off the list next week is the Christmas card photo.  The one we did last year with Bowie was a hit but we’re looking to get a picture this year with the three of us.  I ordered a glittery Christmas banner off of Etsy for the backdrop and we’ve got mounds of things in buffalo plaid.  Wish us luck for cooperation with Bowie, who never wants to sit still!

Last year's Christmas card
I found a new (old) podcast that’s been keeping me entertained on my drive to and from work and highly recommend it if you haven’t given it a shot already.  Each episode of Mike Rowe’s The Way I Heard It is around 7 minutes and all of the stories are written by him.  If you want to jump in, I recommend starting with the first one to really gauge if the format and content is for you.  He’s certainly a handsome looking older gent and has a melodic baritone voice, which comes over nicely in podcast format.  If you have any other podcast recommendations, please share them!

During the week, we whipped up this curry braised chicken thigh recipe, which was delicious and WARM for these chilly nights.  I’m sure you could use chicken breasts if you wanted to and when I make it the second time around, I’m going to add chickpeas in addition to the carrots.

In pet corner, I’ve been trying to work on getting more balanced turns at the trot and canter with Mae.  Her favourite thing to do is duck into the corners, which was the primary reason we took to wearing spurs while riding.  It took me long enough to realize that Mae is more balanced in the corners when I put weight into my outside stirrup, however the next step I want her to work on is balancing herself out without the rider.  I’ve read to do that, you are supposed to ask for impulsion right before and through the turn (with your legs) and half halt through the turn so she doesn’t run away with you.  I haven’t executed it perfectly and ended up with a confused horse, but we’ll continue to work at it.  Please feel free to chime in, my equestrian friends.

Stay warm and festive my friends and enjoy the lovely fall weekend!

  1. I love The Way I Heard It! I stumbled on it one day and listened to six in a row.

I am so excited about Christmas cards. I spend months designing it in my head. I was thinking about it earlier in the week and realized the weeks are flying by and I need to start on them! Time goes by so fast.

    1. Yeah it's really just zooming by. Our neighbors have their Christmas lights up, so I think Bryan is dragging down the tree today

    1. P.S. Could you do me a favor? Could you say something nice to our fellow-blogger and my friend Azra? HERE. She's a darker shade of blue but at least I got her blogging again. I owe you one! Better make that two. Two Bora drinks coming up!

  3. Yes!! Slapped is the perfect term. It's Autumn. Let's not skip over my favorite season and put on our Santa hats. We Christmas shop in silence out of respect for the turkey. hahaha

  5. It's been a while Ruth, but I love that you're still here. And yes, this year has been crazy and these past few weeks have been flying by. (Let's not get started on how much time has flown by in years)

    1. It's been a crazy few years and they're all starting to blur together. Is this middle age???

    2. Never ever say middle age out loud. Please.

    3. This is definitely middle age! That or indigestion... everyone always goes back to indigestion - maybe it's because we're middle aged now. Hahahaha.
