One step at a time

Thank you all for your kind words and positive thoughts about my dad.  It's certainly rough going taking each day as it comes and trying not to project expectations.  That being said, when I look at the past few weeks, my dad has made quite a lot of progress.  Even from last week to this week, he has started walking - taking a few steps at a time with assistance!  I was floored after I heard that from his physical therapist.  This is the guy who was still eating pureed food a week ago.  I've been told that I will need to have patience and also have to trust the process.  My dad certainly isn't the only person to ever have a stroke, neither is he the only stroke patient at his rehab facility.  I feel confident in the therapists that he's working with and that he'll continue to show improvements.

For now, the expectation is that he remains at inpatient rehab for another month.  His discharge date is tentatively set for the end of October, at which time he'll go home but enter into an intensive outpatient rehab therapy that is focused on recovering as much as possible.  My sister and her husband arrive from Oregon on Sunday, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to hanging out with them more this fall / winter.

On my end, the four-legged family is doing fine.  Mae has put on over 20 lbs in the past few weeks, making up for the weight that she lost when she had her ulcers.  Since the weather has gotten a tiny bit cooler, we have had really good rides and, I think, enjoy each other's company.  Bowie is happy and hyper as usual.  I can't wait to see how he interacts with his new "dog cousins" from Oregon.

  1. I'm glad your dad is getting better, one step at a time. There is definitely lots of hope to be found after a stroke. My dear friend Erica had a bad one before I met her. Her will and determination (and fabulous team and family) helped her rally and she was able to go back to a very normal life and even retook up riding, though riding was A LOT harder, she still enjoys it to the fullest!
