Cussing up a storm

F***.  Sh**.  D***.  H***.

All my favourite four letter words.  And verbatim what spewed forth from my mouth last night after doing my tax returns (which will be a story for a different day).

But this leads to another topic.  I curse/cuss.  A good amount.  Not as much as say, Jenna Marbles, but a pretty healthy amount.  And in mixed company.*  I used to curse at work, a very male dominated environment, and it was acceptable there.  My nickname was Sailor Rooth and I have been known to go all "sailor" on someone's ass.  I don't have a limited vocabulary, it's just that I don't find words that express exactly what I feel at the time, except for those four letter words.  It's also, I think, a very efficient and succinct form of communication.

When frustrated, I've been known to curse even in front of family.  My mother always has a disappointed look on her face afterwards and asks me to "Act like a lady."  Which is hilarious because I don't do anything even remotely close to being ladylike, except for write thank you cards, which I am religious about.

People either feel pretty strongly one way or the other.  They're either okay with cussing or they're absolutely not.  And I feel like people either do it a lot or not at all.  Is your experience the same?  Also, do you curse a lot and why?

*I don't cuss in front of children.  Because they pick it up like sponges and then I get in real trouble.

  2. I'm pretty middle of the road when it comes to cussing. My potty mouth comes and goes in waves - it's hard to contain when I'm frustrated. But in general, I don't mind it much when people curse. Unless, of course, we're in the company of children. They're like parrots!

  3. Everybody curses. Depends on when, why and how - some situations may seem more appropriate or acceptable than others.

  4. i'm fine with it when it serves a purpose. like when angry or making an emphatic point. i dislike when it's used like habit in every other sentence. my BIL just says f-this and f-that constantly. it's similar to using any limited vocab.

a good cuss out can be very gratifying. lol

  5. I do curse sometimes if I hit myself so it really hurts or if I break things or so. I don´t do it in front of my kids though since I find it awful to hear kids curse (and they do as we do and not as we say).

However; if someone curses ALL the time - like 37 times in a sentence - I cringe inside. It should be saved for the times one really need it or it loses it´s power, haha! :-D

  6. Sailor Rooth = awesome!

SIT . . . only that's not what I say. Yeah, that's my word of choice. And it's a slippery sucker. I never intend to swear--but under moments of duress, it just flies out.

    *Love your footnote! :)

  7. Shame shame shame....How dare you?!?!
Hehehe...I used to swear a lot until the kids. Now, it only happens when I'm super angry.

  8. Interesting topic! It's very come-and-go for me, depending on what's going on in my life. When I was a teacher, times were stressful, and I spent a lot of time with a couple of male teachers with the worst mouths I've ever heard...needless to say, my language reflected that. But now I hardly ever do it anymore. Doesn't bother me much either way, unless someone is inconsiderate of their surroundings...like when kids are around.

  9. This post made me smile. I hate to admit it, but I curse all the time too. But sometimes I'll just hear my self say "Oh fudge...only I didn't say fudge" (yes, I'll say the entire line). It's from the movie A Christmas Story (and I quote from it all year long!)

  11. i'm not a big cusser, and made it through a month last year as a resolution to not cuss. i try to throw out some fancy words instead, but sometimes you just gotta cuss.
that being said, i get very embarrassed when friends cuss loudly in public--like at a family restaurant, peppering sentences with Fuck for no reason. totally embarrassed.

  13. ha, i love this post. i honestly don't get why some people get SO offended by swear words. they're just sounds and mean nothing. I swear quite a bit too, in casual situations with friends or at home.
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog! So happy i found yours :)
    xoxo,

  14. Hahaha, very funny! I think if you do it too much it's hard to stop and then sometimes it slips out! OOPS! But it sometimes really is a good stress reliever!

  15. I do not swear all that frequently, only when I'm really angry (you know I'm angry when the potty month comes out!).

But it doesn't bother me when anyone else swears, that doesn't bother me at all.

  16. When my siblings and I were younger, mom would get mad and ask where we learned that language. It was always from her. Nothing curses quite like a mother angered!

  17. sailor rooth?! very nice. i like it :) i have sort of a love/hate relationship with cussing. it can definitely be inappropriate at certain times. i try not to cuss in front of people i don't know, but my family, the boyfriend and friends hear it quite often. it doesn't bother me when other people around me cuss. sometimes i don't even notice it. i think it's normal and i really dislike it when people use cutesie alternatives for cuss words. it's annoying. we all know what you want to say. have some balls and say it or just keep quiet.

  20. Far more than I should, yes. Graduate school has made it worse. Where as a JHS teacher, I never used swear words, now I spend enough time hanging around younger folks in their early twenties or even late teens, that I've picked up some nasty habits.

I was doing some coaching for a high school and dropped an f-bomb in front of about three students. Struck by what I had done, I immediately apologised. Luckily it went no further than that. I've been a lot more careful since then.
