Clearing the cobwebs from my mind

I wasn't built for activities, apparently.  Or handling mosquitoes.  The only thing that I had forgot to pack for this trip to Phoenix was bug spray.  Because silly me for assuming that there wouldn't be any mosquitoes in the middle of the desert.  Those f-ers are everywhere.  Twenty bites later and after our kayaking adventure this morning, I dosed myself with Benadryl and fell asleep for an uneasy afternoon nap.  And I'm terrible at napping.  I always wake up feeling discombobulated and with a serious case of cotton mouth.  So I'm spending this afternoon clearing my mind of the cobwebby effects of allergy medicine and the nap and avoiding the heat.  And tonight, we'll be attending a dinner gala, the last event here in Phoenix before jumping on a plane back home tomorrow morning.

Isn't that snap of the Salt River so serene and calming?  Our guide let us get to the front of the pack where I was able to take that photo without other boats and people in the way.  We drifted and paddled downstream for four miles this morning, getting adequately in touch with the Arizona desert and wildlife.

  2. I hate mosquitoes, but the worst bugs I ever encountered are called red bugs. They make your legs feel like someone poured itching powder on you. And it never goes away for days

  3. If it's possible to drift down a river in a hammock, that would be the perfect place to do it--without the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes suck (no pun intended this one time), their love for me is completely unrequited (I hate them).

I'm a bad napper too. More often than not, they leave me with a headache.

Your first sentence has me wondering if there's something interesting you haven't shared yet about the kayaking adventure. Or was it just that you needed a nap? If that's the case, don't feel bad. The AZ sun is sapping. I got tired on the Pink Jeep tour in Sedona. =)

  4. Mosquitos are evil. Just evil. They and ticks should be eradicated; I'm convinced. If you can find white Tiger Balm, that's the best thing I've found for the bites, so they're not so itchy.

Looks like it was a beautiful trip though! Have fun at the gala!

  6. Eek! Mosquitoes . . . so wrong on so many levels. But the river is so lovely . . . and a gala! Ooh-la-la!

Now, a safe trip home, my friend!

  7. Beautiful picture. You know, I can never wake up "refreshed" from a nap either. I always feel exhausted afterwards (no doubt from overdoing it with the length of the 'nap' in my case)

  8. I swear, we can't ever break free of mosquitoes! They're everywhere, and I'm sorry they hindered your trip a bit. But hey, that lake looks breathtaking. Hope you had a great time at the gala! xo

  10. Thank you for taking the time to comment on my blog. Your trip reminded me one of mine ages ago where we took the sampan down the river in the middle of a rainforest. Thank goodness, I was given a very strong mozzie repellent bracelet or else I would've be eaten alive there!

  13. Wow I would have thought the same thing about the mosquitoes! Ugh!

That river looks sooo relaxing. I have a college friend in Phoenix who I love to visit (I love the dry heat) but we've never hung out on a river like that! It looks so nice - I'll definitely be suggesting it next time!

I hope you start feeling better soon and the dinner gala is a lot of fun! Have a good trip home!

Oh now, you forgot to pack the bug spray
but I hope you can purchase it there because mosquitoes are
    very dangerous. Have fun, darling!

  18. Mosquitos can ruin any scenery, that's for sure. You know, if you start eating raw garlic cloves (kind of yucky, I know) they'll leave you alone. It's a trick I picked up in Montana.

  19. I am so glad that summer is here and I can explore your blog some! I can't nap either, and the mosquitoes in Virginia are THICK. We're especially worried this year since we had such a warm summer, but so far so good... When I lived in San Diego we didn't have them, so I'm surprised to hear that about the desert.
