Pirates vs. cowboys

This weekend was 'adults' Halloween' and one of my favourite couples hosted a joint birthday party with a Pirate vs. Cowboys' theme!  They decked out their house, rented a karaoke machine and even had separate cowboy and pirate-themed food and drinks.  The spread was pretty fantastic and these two really know how to throw a good party.  Those of you who follow me on Instagram already know that I went dressed up as a pirate.  And it turns out, I'm a frackin' terrible pirate.  And an even more terrible karaoke singer.

Remember when you were a kid and mom told you not to eat all of your Halloween candy and not to stay up too late?  And remember how you didn't want to listen to her and were so upset when she took half your candy and then made you brush your teeth and go to bed?  Turns out, as always, mom knows best.

I ate too many goodies, drank too much rum punch and stayed up way too late.  Consequently, I spent all of yesterday huddled up with a pillow, blanket and mug of hot tea watching crap football.  Serves me right, I should have listened to mom.

Dueling to the death... on the karaoke machine.  I'm the pirate on the right-hand side.  Y'all, I don't think there are any pictures in which I am NOT singing.  Yep, it's that terrible.

PS - Like the piratey buttered rum cupcakes I made above?  They came out looking pretty cute but tasted just so-so

PPS -  I know the weather is getting really crappy right now for those folks on the East Coast.  Y'all stay safe, ya hear?

  1. Your honesty is so very sweet! I'm sure your buttered rum cupcakes were more than just "so-so". You sure make a cute pirate. If you give that costume a round two, you might consider memorizing these: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/jokes/topics/pirate.shtml

There really is some truth to that candy rule, isn't there?!

  2. Such a cute costume, I was a pirate a few years ago. I went to a party as well this weekend and dressed up as a peacock. I even made my hair blue!

  3. Terrible pirate? I can see that, your teeth are way too good for you to be a convincing pirate. And I see no signs of scurvy. You look wonderfully healthy--must have been early in the evening. Hahaha!!!

Rum is similar to coffee to me, in that I like most rum flavored things, but don't have rum itself very often. I'm sure I would have loved your cupcakes. Once when I felt like I was coming down with something I ordered a hot-buttered rum with dinner...it made me feel better. :)

PS - I listened to mom and I was still stuck with crap football this weekend.

  11. Karaoke scares me. I would have been huddled under the table, eating cheese and Buttered rum cupcakes . . . Arrr!

I missed my friends Halloween party last weekend because was editing student papers. Also scary. :)

  12. Hahaha at least you had fun! The amount of fun you had is inversely proportional to how crappy you feel the day after ;) You're a cute pirate!!

  14. haha, you look like you are having fun singing - who cares if your voice is terrible? i don't think pirates are known for their fantastic voices anyway.

  16. I think you make a pretty dang good pirate. I love this idea. I need to follow you on Instagram, but I don't have my phone (because I dropped it in a cup of water). I'll get on that as soon as I'm up and running again.

  20. Happy happy Halloween Ruth!!!! The karaoke is such a killer idea! I LOVE doing karaoke and in Asia they usually have rooms where you and your friends can go to and sing the heck out less publicly. lol

  21. I love your pirate costume! Rrrrrrr!

Karoke is such a fun idea, I tend to hog the microphone too. hehe

  22. The cupcakes are so cute! I'm sure they tasted better than you think and if not, just tell people they were made with love.

I'm terrified of singing to karaoke. For the good of the public, there are few people I will sing in front of. Since you didn't get kicked out, I'm assuming you can carry a tune. :)
