The littlest vampire

When I was a wee one, my parents liked to dress me up** (I think most parents do this - if I were a parent, I'd definitely take full advantage of when my child could not pick his/her own wardrobe).  My mother would Barbie me up in foofy dresses with spotted pink heart tights.  The earliest Halloween costume that I can remember, I was dressed up as Barbie.  I cried, nay, WAILED the entire time we were trick or treating because my best friend Mo had dressed up as a pirate and his fake mustache was freaking me out.  There was also one particular pre-k Halloween costume where my mom dressed me as an 80s rock star (Note: the decade is important).  She bought me a metallic rainbow wig and dressed me in her flashiest gold lamé shirt (tunic-sized on me).  I was caked in turquoise eye shadow that extended up through my eye brows and given a microphone as a prop.  And diva I did, the whole day long.

Flash forward to when I was in elementary school and was too cool for those types of girlie costumes.  No princess or ballerina costumes for me.  I wanted to be something scary, something mean, something dangerous.  Enter Count Roothula.  With her hardcore skull and crossbones earrings.  And epic Snoopy Christmas tights.  Yes, my dad drew in the fake blood around my mouth and the widow's peak.*  If this picture doesn't scare you sleepless, I don't know what will.

*Side story about my dad, he was in theater all throughout college and wanted to get into costume and makeup design as a career.  The makeup for this Halloween costume was toned down.  When I was two years old, he dressed me up as a mini business man.  I wore a button down white shirt, tie and carried a briefcase.  He also drew a mustache on me and stuck a fake paper cigarette in my mouth.  This was not for Halloween.  We have pictures.

**My parents didn't seem to bother as much with my younger sister.  They were perfectly content to let her put a tutu on over her pjs and pull a pair of tights on her head as her costume for Halloween.

  5. Omg this is adorable! what an amazing photo, I love its aged look too. I think we need to see a photo of the little business man ;)

I have a pic of my sister and I in front of a scarecrow on Halloween, when I was about 4. I went as Snow White and had this Snow White mask on that looked just like the Disney cartoon. Looking at that photo now, I wouldn't be surprised if I gave the other children nightmares! Human face masks are never not creepy!

  6. Aahhhh! What a great costume! I love the widow's peak. Did I read that right? The two-year-old, cross-dressing business man was not for Halloween? I rubbed my eyes, but it still seemed to say that. I hope the mood to share that picture strikes before Halloween. :)

Being the youngest, I didn't get dressed up by my parents either. Most years I went out as a little hobo. One year I was a lumberjack--with a real axe. And one year I was a secret agent (trench coat and plastic luger).

  7. My parents had such good taste in clothes, I really wish I could have kept some of the pieces they picked out for me. I never had Halloween growing up in Israel, but we had Purim, for which we would dress up. My grandmother was a dress-maker and she made all my costumes - they were stunning. I guess I lucked out with my family!

  8. Lol! Count Roothula. I love it! You are too cute! And oh man. Barbie. I would have loved to dress up as Barbie when I was younger. Alas, the closest I ever got was Rainbow Brite. I loved Rainbow Brite tho. Not gonna lie. :)

  13. Count Roothula is going to go viral for sure! Little Roothulas will be roaming Houston scaring the beejeeezus out of everyone. Your parents sound so much fun. Yes, speaking as a parent, I took full advantage in outfitting my kids in everything GYMBOREE until they could protest. Now my kids' favorite colors are grey, light grey, and dark grey. Our Xmas cards are totally me and then you can clearly see when they STOPPED being under my creative outlet!

  14. Count Roothula how fierce! Love the costume! I would have loved to see the 80ies rock star costume as well, I loved dressing myself up like those as a kid. Teased my hair like a crazy person and then cried because I couldn't comb it back out...Kids, ha ha...

  20. that is hilarious. i have twins and i really have to tell myself around halloween to let them be whatever they want. but really, when you have twins it seems almost criminal to not dress them as a dynamic duo or some sort. i love dressing up my kids so i can relate, toxic make-up all over their faces isn't a problem for me come october 31st! and while i am such a nice, gentle and relaxed mom all the rest of the year i turn all pageant mom and yell at them to hold still while i apply their toxic make-up and get all irritated when their tears mess it up ; )

  21. Love your costume. And i love the stories about your dad.

I always had fairly benign costumes, when I was three I was "a present", I also was a drummer girl, pippy long stocking, a court jester...

  22. My dad made me awesome Halloween costumes. R2D2 one year out of plastic garbage cans painted silver (trust me) complete with a "candy chute." My mom sewed me a Princess Leah costume one year too.

But I'm curious...do you like to dress up now?

  23. I love, love, love this picture and this post. My earliest memory is being a fairy princess, complete with sparklers. I was always a girly girl.
