Who's the boss?

Indulgy
I don't often laugh out loud when I read (sometimes a book can eek out a smirk) but certainly, that was not the case when I read Bossypants by Tina Fey.  It was the October book for bookclub and quite interesting fodder for conversation.  For all of us bookish people, I think we were surprised that it delved into as much detail with regards to her career as it did, skipping lightly past her personal life, and focused as heavily on the role of women in comedy.  And even though we thought the pacing of the book was off with the chapters organized almost like individual short stories, we agreed that Tina is one who can actually get away with it.

Because she's hilarious - and hilarious in the laugh out loud sense.  Have you ever tried to write something funny?  I have but I don't think anyone actually notices my efforts because it doesn't read as funny.  She somehow pulls off this awkward but funny narration, cemented as her own through her 30 Rock portrayal of Liz Lemon, and inserts asides and self-deprecating remarks as though they belong in the text and aren't random, astericky side thought bubbles like I do.

And then there's the hard work.  I suppose that I was among the masses, awed by her celebrity and assuming that brains, good fortune and good looks graces her like it does with the lucky few.  I was wrong.  The girl works hard and has been working her whole life to get to where she is in her career.  It's definitely all sweat equity (okay, maybe 99% sweat equity and 1% luck).  What your parents, say is true - if you want something bad enough, you've got to work hard to get it.  And it applies to most everyone - 99.999999% of everyone.

So Bossypants = good bookclub material.  We've decided for the next book that we're going for a mystery or thriller.  Does anyone have suggestions for a book of this genre that would also incite lively discussion and discourse?

  1. Ooh, I have been meaning to read this book for awhile now and I'm actually thinking of getting the audiobook version as I think Tina reads it herself. Excitedness!

Oh, I don't know about scary books. The only ones I ever read were by Stephen King and those R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike ones from when I was a teenager. Ha. Have I totally dated myself? ;)

  2. Tony was, until he made the mistake of marrying Angela. Oh, sorry, that was something else. :)

I'm glad I mentioned today that you're funny (before reading this), that means you have to believe it when I say people notice! I like Tina's sense of humor. Since it's not (usually) a knee to the groin, some people don't appreciate it. 30 Rock has been on the air a while, but it should have been a much bigger hit.

"Why are you wearing a tux?"
    "Because it's after 6:00. What am I, a farmer???"

  3. I haven't read this one yet, but I want to so badly! You know what you guys should read, "The Thirteenth Tale! It's legit! And you know it is, cause this is coming from a Neil Gaiman fan! Or "The Historian", but that one is hella long!

  5. This has been on my list for ages - it's now been bumped up! I haven't read a mystery or thriller in years so I can't give suggestions but I would love to hear what you pick.

  7. I have no suggestions, as I look to you for book recommendations, but THIS book is so hilarious. I agree...I literally threw my head back in laughter during most of it. Loved it.

  10. Her book has been in my cart for a while and this might be the final push I need to read it. I really like her, I just HATE 30 Rock and find it obnoxious, so I'm hoping the book isn't too similar in tastes of humor.

  11. I love her so much...she is such an inspirational person. And yes, just totally hilarious.

It's short, but I'd recommend Dear Mr. Rogers, Does it Ever Rain in Your Neighborhood? SO adorable, but also deep.

  12. You are totally right- Hilarity in writing is completely different than being funny in person. Why is that? Timing? Not being able to feed off the reactions of your audience?

I think you're funny... and am always looking for book suggestions!
I just finished Gone Girl. It's not exactly spooky or even what I'd call a thriller, but it IS suspenseful! Have you read it?

  13. I really really wanna read this for the longest time, but don't know why I still haven't to this day. Will buy it for sure:) Tina is just a rock star!

  14. I loved this book so much. Her dad is a real kick in the pants. I also recommend Chelsea Handler's books if you like funny ones.

I think I am going to read Gone Girl next. It is supposed to be suspenseful, and after dragging through the final 50 Shades book, I need something engaging.

  16. It pains me to say this, but I have yet to read Bossypants! I'd love to, of course, in due time so I'll most likely be saving it for the winter. However, I did manage to read Gone Girl this past summer. It's a great read if you're looking for a mystery/thriller! Really addicting.

  17. You know yourre right. Often we just see the end result, a celebrity, and we never hear about the work that went into it.

  18. Oh, you sure are funny! Don't be mistaken about that :)

  19. Might have to add that to my future book list.

Agree with Gabriela - you're funny. Don't sell yourself short! Your posts often make me laugh. :)

  20. I do love a good laugh. Speaking of which, I'm gonna go ahead and 'ditto' the people above. You are a fabulous writer, who often weaves in humor! Just one of the many reasons we love you . . .

As for mystery/thrillers--that's about all I've read as of late, you would think I would have some suggestions. Alas, I've read nothing new. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. :)

  21. I love Bossypants - I think Tina Fey is genius. On my list to read is Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling...I've heard nothing but good things about that too.

  22. I always wanted to read this book, never got around to it. Guess now I'll have to make a point of doing so :)

  23. You are like the eleventy billionth person I've had recommend this book. Not my usual poison, but I might have to look into it...

  24. We read Bossypants for book club also and we all loved it. I honestly laughed out loud, and received strange looks from my family every time I did. I really want to read Mindy Kaling's book next.
Ok, as far as mysteries/thrillers go, have you read Girl with the Dragon Tatoo? Or, Erin recently mentioned The Snowman by Jo Nesbo.
