Ides of March

Society6
And straight away into March we gallop.  Which I still can’t believe, particularly when it’s in the mid-30s and we have freezing rain / sleet tonight and tomorrow morning.  Winter is hitting Texas (and the rest of the country, I’m sure) with a POW and doesn’t show signs of letting up.  Last week, while I was frolicking on the ski slopes in Utah, Dallas had its own freak snowstorm that snarled up the highways and made the overpasses and bridges into gigantic slip and slides.  I’ll admit, I didn’t regret missing the Texas snowstorm in lieu of a roaring fire and a warm hand to hold after a long day on skis in Park City.

With all the travel that I’ve been doing in February, I’ve had less time to spend at the barn this month, which is probably a good thing as the horses have been acting up with the extended cold spell.  They’re growing tired of being cooped up in their stalls and their blankets rubbing on their shoulders and backs - who can blame them as we feel the same with our bulky puffy jackets and scarves that have long outgrown their novelty.  This past weekend, Ryon nailed our groom on the thigh with a well-aimed kick whilst heading back to his stall for dinnertime and will now be led everywhere with a chain over his nose, as one does with young racehorses.  He’s always been so food motivated that his eagerness to get to his food bowl does not surprise me much but his aggression toward people does, particularly those who he is familiar and accustomed to.  Ryon’s never acted aggressive or mean toward me, but I’ve heard multiple stories about how he’s kicked out at others in the barn.  Luckily, no one has gotten seriously injured but the possibility is there especially as large as he is, hence the chain on the nose.

For now, we’re all just focused on staying warm and dry and staying away from Ryon’s hind end.  If we can manage to do those two things, I think we’ll hit springtime just fine.

  1. I'm sorry to hear about Ryon and his nose being chained :c
I bet he's missing the warmth and Spring sunshine...
Lets all stay warm and avoid catching a cold :P Xx

  2. Aaaaaw...poor Ryon. I'm sure it's just the weather that's getting to him. Seriously...this winter has just been so crazy for everyone!

PS I just put whatever shade of purple I can find and put it on my hair when it starts to fade out. I think there's about 5 different shades in there now:D

  3. I hope the weather clears up for you guys. It has been pretty brutal (according to images I've seen on my FB feed at least). We had a pretty mild summer, thankfully because I hate warm weather and now that it's officially the end of summer over here we've been greeted with some cool and sharp chills today. Can't tell you how much I am loving it!

  8. The ides are a time to beware--and we should always beware of horses' hind ends. :)
Instead of staying dry and warm, I played outside this morning with my Yaktraks, they worked great on ice. But before long there was too much snow. After some hot soup, now I'm waiting to shovel.

PS - A cold hand can be nice too if that warm heart thing is true.

  10. Hope Ryon doesn't act out again! Piri sometimes acts out on me - most times when he is uncomfortable or he is in pain.. although sometimes I don't know why or where he is feeling it. People can't believe how Piri can growl or sometimes even bite my hand because he looks so calm in pictures but he has had his moments although rare. I'm hoping all this snow and ice business goes away soon. We were dumped with about 7 inches of snow yesterday and we're digging ourselves out of it. Please please.. let this be the last one!

  12. Aw I'm sure with springtime approaching, your horses will be able to get time out of the barns! I know I'm excited for the warm weather and I'm sure they, especially, are too :)

  13. Well, well... you were frolicking on the ski slopes in Utah. I'm not jealous at all.

  14. Hello my lovely. I've missed you. :) I want to hear all bout skiing and see pictures of big mountains and imagine the thrill of speeding down the slopes. I prefer the thrill of the fire and a good book myself. ;)

Poor Ryon. And poor you. We well know that particular worry about your beloved animal. That hint of mistrust. While we were away our pet sitter (not our regular guy) either *forgot* or *relaxed* or *spaced out* our something but Lucy attacked our corgi Thea and injured her quite seriously. We were at dinner on our last night and got the call as they rushed her to the emergency vet. It's terribly troubling and anxiety producing. You need warmth and sunshine and exercise... we all do! XOXO
