Strange Ways

Can we get away to this place?  Love this print and that it's by a local artist - buy it here!

Hey y’all, I know these are some rather strange, unpredictable times right now.  As of today, restaurants, bars, and most retail businesses are closed.  The school districts are closed indefinitely.  Bryan and I are both still working (not from home), but he doesn’t have any upcoming trips on his calendar and I’m taking it day-by-day in the office.

It seems very odd since I really haven’t been “out there” to really tell the difference.  I haven’t gone to a grocery store (or any other store for that matter) in over three weeks.  I’ve only heard about empty shelves or seen pictures on social media, which makes it seem like an alternate reality.

Our household is remaining level-headed during this time.  Bryan’s parents are still down in Corpus Christi, where there are no cases of COVID-19 yet.  My parents are hunkered down in their home with plenty of supplies (they went overboard early).  My sister and brother-in-law in Portland, Oregon are also staying at home except for going out to walk the dog.  He’s a teacher and they’ve told him not to go back until May.  However, everyone is healthy so far and being prudent and smart.  All dogs in the household are thrilled because of the number of people at home all the time now.

Bryan was able to go to the grocery store yesterday, which he says is slowly being restocked.  I’m expecting everything in the state to be shut down rather soon.  We’re working with a small skeleton crew at work and everyone else is able to work remotely.  The irony is that I’ve been at work longer now than before, and I can definitely feel that impact on my leg.  All rules have been thrown out so I need to remember to be my own advocate.

Bryan's birthday was this week, and we had a mini celebration with him at home, complete with corned beef and potatoes and blueberry pie.  He also got a massive delivery of cookies on his birthday so you know we're set for quarantine supplies - cookies for days!  I hope you all are staying safe and sane.  Please drop me a line and let me know how you’re doing and a happy thing that you’ve got going on!

  2. Last Wednesday, I did a quick grocery store run for a couple of things and noticed that there was still plenty of toilet paper and cold medication. You would have never known COVID was here. On Thursday I realized we needed more TP but decided to wait until Friday to get it with our normal grocery store run. On Friday the president announced a state of emergency and...I walked into the same grocery store as Wednesday to discover everything cleared out. It suddenly became very, very real.

On Monday all of the gyms, restaurants and bars in our state closed. My husband is a nurse in both an ER and a nephrology department, so he works with critical patients. They already have protocols in place for handling these cases, but PPE to protect the nurses is limited. When this gets out of hand (I hate how this country is handling this), the nurses and doctors are not going to have enough equipment to keep from getting sick themselves. To say I am worried about his safety is an understatement. Veterinary staff are also continued essential, so will I also have to continue working when we go on full lockdown...and getting directly exposed to the public myself. When clients are worried about their pets, they forget that if they are sick they can get the veterinary staff sick as well. We are currently not allowing them in the building: pets are picked up outside at their vehicles and histories are obtained over the phone. Pets can also still transmit it on their fur if their owner is sick and has been petting/kissing their pets.

In the meantime, I've been trying to spend as much time outdoors as possible since I don't know for how much longer we'll be able to do that. We live in an apartment complex so no backyard. The sun, the sky and the flowers starting to bloom with incoming spring help to lighten my mood as I try to focus on living one day at a time.

The world is a really strange place right now. I'm glad you guys are well!

    1. Nicole, I've been thinking of both you and your husband. Please stay as safe as you both can. It does seem so odd that everything is turning into Spring all around us but we have this heavy situation hanging over us. Take care of yourselves!

  4. Thank you for the update, Ruth. XOXO It is so scary how the state of things are right now. That's great to hear that everyone you know is doing well.
It's the same for us here...everything is now closed except for essential services. My husband, unfortunately, works in an essential industry so he still goes to work but the kids and I are staying put. Our area is unfortunately experiencing a big spike when it comes to positive cases.Pisses me off to see some people treating this like a vacation...still going out and hanging with people. :(

    1. I am constantly yelling at my parents to stop going to the grocery store. They are stocked up and need to stop leaving the house. I'm glad that you all are healthy - stay safe Emmy

  5. It's crazy to think about how much has changed recently. I am no longer able to attend university, and everyone has gone home so I'm alone in the town and need to be self-isolated. It's looking like graduation will be cancelled, too.

I hope that you're staying safe during this coronavirus outbreak, and are feeling well.

    Have a good weekend!

  7. It's been a weird one. Lina is happy I am home as well. Please do remember to be your own advocate. Overworking yourself and hurting your leg would not be great right now. Its a bit more difficult to get into the drs offices around here.

  9. Quarantine birthdays are...an interesting phenomenon. We've just gotten into playing remote games (Jackboxgames.com) via our smartphones + Zoom. It works okay.

But I still miss actual faces.
