where we are by Gerald Locklin

(for edward field)

i envy those
who live in two places:
new york, say, and london;
wales and spain;
l.a. and paris;
hawaii and switzerland.

there is always the anticipation
of the change, the chance that what is wrong
is the result of where you are. i have
always loved both the freshness of
arriving and the relief of leaving. with
two homes every move would be a homecoming.
i am not even considering the weather, hot
or cold, dry or wet: i am talking about hope.

  2. Has he looked inside my heart? I love this. Thank you so much for sharing it! My dearest girlfriend and I were planning our weddings at the same time and would joke about our dresses: can it be both long *and* short? Can it have both a slim skirt *and* a full one? Can it be both casual *and* dressy? Exactly the same thing.

  4. Oh, I really do love this . . . I've thought about what it might be like to have two homes, but the idea of hope never entered into the equation . . .

  5. Lovely. But I'm not a big believer in geographical solutions to unhappiness (even though Paris IS my happy place). You can chase it forever to a million different cities but if you're unhappy inside, you'll be unhappy no matter where you are. xo

  6. That is just the loveliest quote. I agree with the idea that wherever you go there you are in theory, but have found that there is power and magic in moving and new beginnings can be an amazing way to create the life you want. I love his idea of hope, that moves beyond place. Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

  8. i love this. and i love portland, there is so much to love here, but of course it's my 'home' and everyone at some point wants nothing more than to be somewhere other than where they were born and raised. so i have always thought that having a second home would be the perfect fix for this. summers here and winters . . . somewhere else. maybe i should get a lottery ticket tonight ;)

  9. As an avid traveller and someone who regularly has more than one home, I LOVED this!
