Tickets to the The Picture Show

I am, like many, a big fan of NPR.  It's where I get the majority of my book recommendations.  I'm probably a bit late to the game in discovering NPR's media blog - The Picture Show.  If you haven't visited this blog before, it is a collection of some really nicely curated photographs and the NPR bloggers' commentary around them.  NPR sources these pictures from all over and it serves as daily inspirational look at photography for amateurs such as myself.  Below are some of the recent ones I've enjoyed.

via Corcoran Gallery
via Charlotte Dumas
Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas' exhibit Anima at the Corcoran Gallery of Art is a series of photographs of the horses that pull a caisson holding caskets of military soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery.  If you like photographs of dogs or horses, her work features rough and tumble, yet magnificent  working animals in a variety of their natural environments, e.g. search and rescue dogs, horses used to reenactments, etc.
via Jean-Joseph Renucci
Jean-Joseph Renucci, a designer, who makes these "little people" landscapes as a side project.  Click through to his website to see even more entertaining little people settings.  I think I could write short stories around each of his photographs.

via Gregg Segal
Gregg Segal's 2010 project - State of the Union - was an homage to the Civil War and its juxtaposition to "modern day" society.  Segal explains that a lot of the old Civil War battle sites have been overrun by housing developments and shopping malls and his pictures highlight that mesh of environments.  His use of colour in his photographs is something I was particularly drawn to.

  1. It's very inspiring, especially Jean-Joseph Renucci's work. It's how the world looks like at times - destructive but forward moving (is that flour and egg yolk in that photo? lol).

  2. Oh, I visit NPR almost solely for books and political commentary. Never seen this feature, though, so thanks for sharing!
The last one is definitely my favorite. I like that the soldier / camper looks almost comical compared to everything else.

  4. I like NPR but I never really go to their website so this is interesting to see. The one with the plastic toys reminds me of Pongo, Giant Dog of Tokyo - an old SNL skit that apparently no one else but I have ever seen. :)

  8. Love all the pics you chose, Rooth:-) I hate using the word "adorable" to describe art, but Renucci's work is just that!

  10. Very cool! I'm not familiar with The Picture Show, I need to bookmark the site.

The Corcoran was originally housed in what is now the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery.

  12. These are wonderful! I love how you've juxtaposed the dramatic with the whimsical. Have you checked out the blog Durham Township? Kathleen Connaly (?) is a landscape photographer that does stunning stuff around her home of Durham Township, Pennsylvania. I bet you'd like it.

  15. Love the photographs of the horses and the mini people at the top of the "volcano." Really clever stuff! And would you believe that I don't listen to NPR? I don't have a car so I never listen to the radio, and I don't keep one on at home. Shame on me, I know.

  17. I enjoy a good NPR show too...something about their voices are so calming and professional. How wonderful is that snail photo. And yes— that is what I mean. "Awkward" was the word I was looking for.
