Going Downtown

Today we're going to Downtown Austin to check out a property called the Palazzo Lavaca that dates back to 1890 and was originally an engine house and, most recently, Capitol Saddlery.  The interior is utterly sumptuous and has been the location for many Austin events and bridal photo shoots.  It is a little bit spooky, particularly that greenish wallpaper throughout the living room, kitchen and master bedroom, but romantic at the same time.  Plus you can't beat that view of the capitol while you're washing the dishes.  It and all of its historical ghosts can be yours for a mere $4.4 million.

I can see this space becoming completely different if the colour scheme was slightly altered - brightened up in a few of the common living spaces.  What do y'all think?  Place to live or live set for vampire movies?

  1. Totally just watched a documentary on the "history of vampires", so naturally, the spaces look like they belong in True Blood. BUT I love the warm colors and wood ceilings!

  2. This is such a great space... I agree with Sara and I say this as I'm watching true blood... Haha!!!

  3. I agree with Sara, I really like the ceiling. The current decorations give the place a creepy/fun vibe, but to live there would require changes. But the tub would stay. It looks like a nice place to read. :)

  4. It's too over the top for me to say that it's beautiful but it certainly stopped me dead in my tracks. Saying that, there are elements about it that I love - the walls in the kitchen, the overdyed rugs in the bedroom and the free-standing bath!

  5. This seems like one of those places I really like...looking at and musing over the decorations (I really like the bathroom, though that animal print chair is not...my style?), but ultimately not a place I could live in. It feels like a warm place to live in though (:

  6. I love it, but I doubt I would want or could live there. wedding photos there would be great, tho...

  7. Definitely a vampire movie. And for some reason, I now have the theme song from the Adam's Family looping through my head. Weird.

  8. I'm leaning creepy, sadly. I love the space, but it's a bit too much for me. But those views, that ceiling? To die for. So to speak.

  9. Because I live vamps, I can totally see myself living here with Edward (no Bella, of course). It is such a beautiful space:)

  10. For some reason I'm reminded of the mansion from the movie Casper! It's a little spooky, you're right, but I love that bathroom! I think the lighting in the photos isn't helping the creep-factor, either!

  11. Wow, these photos are beautiful! I totally see this being the set of some horror movie, maybe not vampires...house on haunted hill perhaps? :)

  18. I've never been a huge fan of dark walls, but these look pretty cool!

  19. It always fascinates me to see a home that was once entirely something else (tannery, engine house, sewing factory, resturant...). The decor is a bit much, but the home has wonderful bones and character.

  20. OK, this maybe should have been your pick for the haunted place. But, I do somehow like the over the topness about it.

  21. I love that you share such history with us! Keep it up, girl. You are a great writer, by the way.

  22. Wow what an interesting building. While I think it has good bones, Im not really feeling those dark hues throughout. I'd definitely want to lighten the place up, but even then, I probably wouldn't choose to live there if I had 4 mil to spend on a house!
