Who's afraid?

Daveflynn
By now, you've all heard of all of the little things that Ryon's afraid of.  Birds, moths, loud noises.  The list seems ever endless and I have bruises on my legs that attest to his fear of flapping wings.  I laugh and am angry at the same time whenever he spooks at a bird's cry or a child's shout.  Or even someone rounding the corner, unexpectedly, with a wheelbarrow of shavings.  But I found out tonight what Ryon's not afraid of.

Snakes.

We were practically on top of two of them, curled up on the side of the arena this evening, before I noticed them, each about a foot long and hissing away as Ryon stomped ever closer.  I will admit, I may have gasped and quickly yanked him away before I could really see what kind of snakes they were.  He didn't even miss a beat, didn't notice them (or didn't care about them) at all.  The entire incident still gives me chills.  Not because I'm scared of snakes (I'll leave that task up to my dad's entire side of the family), but what if they had whipped up and bitten Ryon?  Snake bites, even for how large horses are, are terrible things.  Or even just startled him.  The last thing he needs is another side of that arena to be scared of.  Thank goodness for small favors.  My buddy is either very brave or very blind.  Let's assume it's the former.

  1. Yes....I assume it's the former.
But seriously, good to know you both got away unharmed. I would've freaked out:O

  2. Oh yea, I bet it's bravery. He was probably trying to keep calm for you, so that you wouldn't be afraid :)

  3. I agree with the theory he was keeping calm for your sake. Although, he should know you well enough by now to know you're pretty fearless. Maybe he was trying to make you proud??? :)

  4. Totes mcgotes afraid of snakes, and there's no shame in that game (Ryon is braver than me!). I'm also afraid of worms, to be honest. Maybe not afraid per se, but whenever I see one my knees feel like jello and I get all panicky. Now, gummiy worms on the other hand...xo

  6. ryon has his phobias all mixed up. i am definitely afraid of snakes. not only are they creepy, but they can kill you. so i say that's a pretty valid fear all around. but it's a good thing ryon's not or things might have gotten a little crazy in that arena. xo

  7. He's a brave one ; ) I dont' mind snake (as long as they r not coming towards me) vs silverfish (way smaller) eeeeeeeek, I would literlly jump on a table (mice, no prob/ spiders, no prob / alligators, no prob, sharks [which I have swam with], no prob) .. but there is always that I thing that challenges us = aka:eeeekkkk!). Guess we all (humans + animals) have bravery and scardy-cat genes haha.

  9. Hmm, so how about he is actually quite fearless and all those other things that make him flip out are not things that he is afraid of- just things that annoy him? I think this is how I will think of Ryon ;-)
