My weekly zombie run

Society6

I exercise a little differently than most people.  When hitting the pavement or pumping iron, the average gym rat listens to music with fast beats and inspirational melodies that will motivate them to go the 'extra mile' so to speak.  I listen to stories.

It all started when I discovered PRI's Selected Shorts.  They broadcast a free weekly podcast of a famous actor reading an award winning short story of two in front of a live audience.  Some of the stories, like The Monkey's Paw or The Rocking-Horse Winner, are classics and old favourites.  And others are short stories written by famous authors, new gems that I've never read or even heard of before.  Although music may push you, the stories inspire me to keep going, if only to work out long enough to hear the end.

Recently, as evident by my lake pictures, on the weekends I've started taking long lopes around the big trail around the lake.  These trips are quite long (I'm quite slow) and I've turned to zombies to keep up the energy level.  We're Alive is a podcast that has been running since May 2009 and is the tale of an Army Reserve soldier Michael Cross living in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse.  And this wonderfully free podcast is not just a person reading a story.  There are different actors that play the different characters, sound effects, music, etc.  It is a full scale production.

So if you're looking for something new to listen to, at the gym, at work, on your commute, I encourage you to check these out.  I'm a big fan of stories and these two podcasts will tell you stories that can literally move you.

Again, I'm not sponsored by either of the podcasts - just a huge huge fan.

  1. Noel is a huge fan of podcasts, but I've never really listened to one. This does sound interesting, though, and I think this is the only way I could ever run...if I had something really great to listen to!

  2. Hmm . . . I wonder how that would work for me? I tend to be rather accident prone--what if I got too involved in the story and fell off the treadmill/sidewalk? Hmm. I'll keep you posted.

If you don't hear from me for weeks on end, you'll know it didn't go well.

  5. That's hilarious and awesome to find out about! I don't listen to a ton of music at work but when I do I usually tune into an NSync Pandora station and let the nostalgia take over :)

  6. Thank you for your comment. I heart the title of my post too and it's a wise thing from your girlfriend to remind you off because she is right ;) That you listen to stories instead music is quite interesting. I have never come across this before but it seems worth giving a try!

  8. That is awesome! I love that you listen to zombie podcasts and stories while you run. Have you listened to the moth podcasts at all? Zombies would probably make me run too, unless they had the rage, then they would overtake and eat me.

I used to listen to music when I ran, not to move me, but so I didn't run or breathe too fast for my own good and get a cramp in my side and then have an excuse to walk {that's what I really wanted}.

  9. That is different--and a great idea for a way to distract yourself while you exercise. I've been a music person in the gym. Eye of the Tiger gives me a real burst. :)

When I used to run, I didn't like wearing earbuds so I made up my own stories as I went.

  10. Thanks for sharing! I listened to a few on this rainy morning. TedTalks get me through unloading the dishwasher, and tv shows (instead of music) often keep me going at the gym because I, too, am holding out for the end. I totally agree!

  11. Oooh interesting! I'll have to try this the next time I get sick of listening to Kesha while working out :-)
