Happiness is just around the corner

My belated birthday gift
So essentially five seconds after I published my blog post about being lonely and homesick last week, I received a surprise "Congratulations on the new job" card and a belated birthday gift from friends and an entertaining Skype call.  A girlfriend later called me just to catch up and hear about my new job and my new place.

And what have I learned after throwing myself a mini pity party?  That things, like the weather in Texas, turn around really quick.  That I have it really good.  That people think about me, even if it's from afar, and do the little things that show that they care.  That home is really where all the people that I care about are and not about where I keep my things.  I'm a lucky lucky gal* (with a serious peppermint Oreo addiction) and have the luxury of complaining about not being near some of the people I care about.

Have you ever felt silly about complaining about something after realizing that things are really much better than you initially thought?

*Okay so maybe I'm a cold girl who still can't get a full night's rest at my new apartment.  It wouldn't be me if I couldn't find something to complain about, right?

  1. well considering i am a champion complainer, i feel silly after doing so most of the time. but really i think it's healthy. it helps process things and keeps me from saying or doing something that might not be helpful in the end (like going over to my neighbors everyday and asking them to turn their music down). or it just helps you reach that point after complaining where you think "okay, maybe it's not thaaat bad." and you are right, happiness is always right around the corner, glad you found some! xo

  2. You are a lucky gal...and the people who know you are lucky too.

Me complain??? Ha, yes, I've been in that position, embarrassed by losing perspective about what real problems are versus my petty issues.

  3. Yes, I have. Amazing how life always does that to us, reminds us that it's not so bad after all!

    Happy belated birthday

  4. happens to me, too. you feel all miserable and moan about it and all of a sudden the universe turns around and hands you the most wonderful bouquet of flowers. you don't strike me as ungrateful, though. and that's what's most important :)

  5. Sometimes, it does feel good to pity oneself a little - and there´s absolutely no harm in it since that usually leads to what you just said; realization that you´re actually quite lucky. :-)

  7. Pshh, as a certified pity party planner, I can say I relate. It's normal to get whiny and mopey, but I think that's necessary for us to appreciate times when friends rally around us and lift our spirits. It makes it sweeter, you know? You need one to have the other, kind of. I make no sense. xo

  8. I do complain a lot... But to be honest I'm not in a place where I feel I'm building a life... Ore like stuck in high school after having a life that I loved... Working actively on changing things... Great post!

  9. Sometimes you have to get to that point - that complaining - to really truly see what you've got. Everything happens as it should and we live and learn :) Glad to see you've come full circle in a sense. There will be ups and there will be downs - and you always have the blog and your readers to moan to ;)

  10. Pity Parties are just a necessity sometimes. The important thing is that you were able to come out of it and count your blessings.

  11. I am with Santa! Sometimes you just have to indulge your feeling of self pity and then realize there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Great friends is all you need to get back on track! I like to complain too and sometimes all I need is to talk to someone about it and I instantly feel better...

  13. I'm so glad you are feeling better! It's so good to hear from friends, that always helps.

You know you can make thin mints at home and I bet you could put two together and some white stuff inside and you'd have a homemade chocolate covered oreo. That would give you something to focus your energy on next time you're down, and you'd have something to show for it. :)

  14. I think sometimes, too, it helps to vent a little to relieve pressure. Small things (or some large) won't seem so bad if you get them out and can let go of them.

  15. It happens all the time to me too...and more oft than not I'll freak out and be like "ack sorry, I didn't mean to whinge to /you/ so much!" But I think it's okay, within reason. It's better to mention them then to let them build up, even if they seem silly later. It's good to hear that you are feeling happier now (:

  16. That so sweet of your friends. Throwing a pity party does lift the spirit from time to time and enable us to see and appreciate what is truly dear to us.

  18. It happens to me as well. I guess I just get sad easily when I can't find any beauty at all. And when I get sadder, things just kind of blooms. I can't explain it. I think life is just playing jokes on me sometimes. Like, it's teasing me. Hahaha!
