I suppose it's awful bookish of me to continue reading at my pre-work rate in lieu of normal people things like laundry, cook, clean, etc etc etc.  It's really my one tenuous link with sanity, although it's also acting as the one gigantic barrier against making any type of friends in the New City.

Speaking of combining books with social hour, I do miss my old book club right around now.  How does one, exactly, go about finding a proper serious girl book club?  Or I guess I should say serious girl / guy book club?  You wouldn't put an ad in the paper or on Craigslist, would you?  I suppose Facebook could work but I'd rather not everyone in the entire universe of friends that I don't ever talk to anymore know where I am and what I'm doing.

On the plus side, I am participating in Hila's Women Writers Reading Group which is kind of like a book club.  I have never really thought about the gender of the author when picking a book so I'm making a conscious effort to explore the space of women writers and hopefully find some undiscovered gems.

What have you been reading lately and more importantly, are there any women writers that you recommend?

PS - I'm not quite sure what you can tell about a person by judging them based on the covers of the books that they read.  But from my covers this month, would you say that I'm a person prone to violence?!

  4. Currently re-reading for the millionth time Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat - one of my absolute favourites and perfect if you are feeling a bit meh. I have never joined a book club so have no idea how you find one! Maybe try the library?

  5. You know...I forego sleeping and housework everyday for reading, so I totally understand where you're coming from:) It's a source of sanity for me too.
Have you read The 12 Tribes of Hattie? That's a spectacular book by Ayana Mathis.

  9. I've been reading some photography/work related books mixed in with the harry potter series. It's kind of nice mixing the two! I have no idea how to find a local book club, though. I've been trying to get involved with one since moving to SF. And by trying I mean thinking about it and casually asking friends...

  10. I love these posts of yours about books! :)

May I suggest goodreads? It's grown SO much (since I first joined) and even I haven't forayed that far into the reading groups/book clubs sections but it looks really promising.

  11. I think that people are attracted to books that run with current themes in their lives... sometimes it's just a phase :) I'd like to read that book "A house in Fez".

  13. Isn't there a meetup website where people would post things like book clubs that are open to new people? Would they post something like that at your library? I know there is usually someone I work with that is in a book club so maybe at your new job someone will know.

I just read a book about olive oil. I generally read what I call "trashy novels" {those best-selling crime books} or non-fiction, so depending on the day, I'm either nerdy or someone who likes violence. It's amazing how many times I have had conversations about the book I am reading on the subway. :)

  14. Speaking of women writers, you're familiar with Persephone Books, yes? I like to order one from time to time, just to read someone I'm unfamiliar with. The last one I read was Little Boy Lost by Marghanita Laski. I may or may not have shed a tear in the end (Talk about sensitive).

Right now? I am reading a book written by a woman. I'm not sure I want to say it aloud. It's a book I picked up while biding time waiting for my grandma to be done shopping at the Dollar Store. :)

  17. I read my first book in years b/c of 2 friends online doing a virtual book club. Until both of them got super busy with life and we didn't end up discussing any of the book :(. That said, I finished (!) and am looking forward to reading more. I get my book recs from bloggers, so I hope you share some tidbits about your reads. As for in-person book clubs, I've never sought those out so don't know the best avenue. Maybe Meetup.com?

  20. So much catching up to do! First, what did you think of A House in Fez? I LOVED it. But, (reading your next post) I'm sensitive, so be gentle with me if you didn't like it.

Also, a friend of mine started a book club on Craigslist and it's been a huge success. Just saying.
