Recent reads: February 2013

It's obvious this month that I haven't kept up with my reading - seven books in February compared to twelve books in January?  For shame Rooth.  <Shakes her head>

February's books were made up of recommendations (The Sultan's Seal from Freya) and gifts (I Remember Nothing from Mrs. Ricefield).  And my monthly reading is never complete without a book that features cannibalism.  Yep, that was pretty unexpected from a book called Jamrach's Menagerie.  I should have figured - every book where there's some long sea journey undoubtedly ends in the ship being sunk, people marooned on lifeboats and then eating each other to survive.  Or maybe I'm generalizing just a little bit.  What I can't believe, though, is that I hadn't discovered Nora Ephron until now.  Her book I Remember Nothing is a tiny bit tragic (because it alludes to the cancer that claimed her life last year) and a whole lot of hilarious.  There's one entire chapter where she talks about people who eat egg-white omelettes.  It's the ability and talent of people who can write and write so well about nothing that it seems like something that amazes me.  I'm off to pick up a few more of her books just so I can study her storytelling skills.

So if you haven't taken away anything from this post yet, here it is in summary: I'm not reading as much anymore and Nora Ephron was one funny mothertrucker.

I should be a book reviewer.

PS - If you seriously want to know about how any of these books were, leave a comment and I'll email you my real-life thoughts, for what they're worth.

  1. I'm so glad you liked the book! And I still can't believe you didn't know of her funny lady skills. She was pretty awesome and I'm glad we still have her books.

  5. SEVEN? I read two in February, and I seriously have no idea where you find the time. You are a book saint, girl. And now I have to go pick up Nora Ephron's book, because my boyfriend ONLY eats egg-white omelets (he had one for breakfast this morning!).

  7. I didn't know anything about Nora Ephron until she passed away. I still don't know much about her, but it seems like she was a funny, thoughtful, much-loved woman with a lot of talent. I'll have to check out her book you read.

I never recognize any of the books on your reading list, which makes me think you're on a whole 'nother reading level than me. :) We're reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks for my book club right now, and the non-fiction A First-Rate Madness next.

  8. 7 books? I feel like I should hang my head with the 1 I read. I really need to spend more time reading, because I really, really love it.

Have you read all the Austen books?

  10. 7? and 12? Gosh lady, I can't even seem to finish 2 in a month. You have my respect there :)

  11. If I was judging a book by its cover I'd definitely go for Jamrachs Menagerie. And let me echo what others have said 7&12 books?! Good golly. I used to be able to sometimes get through 2 books a week, but definitely not 12. Now my goal is to find/make the time to read 1 or 2 a month.

  12. 7? I feel like I don't even know who you are anymore. Of course, that still puts you way ahead of an average person!!!

Nora and I have complementary skills. I can write about something and make it seem like nothing. :)

What did you think of The Ghost Brigades?

  13. I've heard of Nora Ephron but haven't ever read anything by her. I might put a book of hers on my list.

I just finished reading Zone One - a post-apocalyptic zombie book. I've never actually read one of those before so it was interesting. I think it's definitely better to read about the gore than to see it. There's less squinting involved in reading about zombies :)

  14. I do love Nora Ephron. I'll have to pick up that book . . .

ps-I'd love to hear your thoughts on them all!

  15. You should be a book reviewer. I've never heard of any of these. On my reading list this month is some Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett. I'm gonna stalk your "books" tag.

  17. seven is impressive - seriously impressive! I've added the Nora Ephron to my list - what did you think of tThe House at Tyneford. I read it ages ago and really liked it, but remember being weirded out by the girl hooking up with the father (if I remember the plot correctly).
