Black tie affair

Net A Porter - Wish I could get this one
If I wasn't so busy running around like a headless chicken (sorry to you vegetarians out there), I'd tell you all about the two black tie events that I'm attending in London in February.  And all by my lonesome as well.  At this point, I don't know if it's brave or stupid or both.  I also would tell you how I'm holding out on cutting my disgustingly long hair (complete with split ends) until after this event so I can try to do something with it for these "galas."  I'm not going to lie and tell you I've been doing my usual fashion diligence and shopping for ballgowns.  At this point, I would usually have a few dresses picked out and be in the process of scouring the internets for deals and free shipping.

But not this time - there's simply been no time.

Y'all, I'm going to try to Rent the Runway.  If you haven't heard of this service before, it's pretty much the female equivalent of renting a tuxedo.  Except that you can do it all online and instead of boring tuxedos, you can choose a variety of sparkly, spangly style dresses.  I've never rented a ballgown before (much less worn one) so remind me to tell you all how it goes.  And maybe snap a few photos as well.  Somehow, I think I'm going to be less Cinderella and more the ugly stepsister.

So, if any of you have attended a black tie event, any helpful hints on dresses / shoes / hair / makeup would be much appreciated by this secret tomboy.  And if you've ever tried Rent the Runway, tell me about your experience.

  1. Boring tuxedos??? I think that depends on who is wearing them. I've walked through lots of events, but details like clothes, hair and makeup didn't catch my attention. I did notice a lot of old guys with young dates though.

I don't think you can pull off being an ugly step-sister.

  4. I'm not fancy enough to have had a reason to use Rent the Runway, nor attend a black tie affair, so I'm going to live vicariously through you on this one! Bon chance! You will look fab, of course. xo

  5. Ooh I've had a friend who has recommended Rent the Runway before. They have some great options, good luck! I think it's important to choose a long dress that'll feel comfortable all throughout the event. I'm a bit on the hesitant side when it comes to short dresses or too much skin showing. I love the one you've selected above, so classy! I hope you finding something similar :)

  7. I LOVE Rent the Runway. They have great dresses to choose from at great prices, you can add a back-up size for no additional cost or a whole other back-up dress for a small fee ($25, I think). I've used it for dresses for friends' weddings and even used it to rent a dress for our wedding reception. I've only rented from them about 5 times but I had a positive experience with them every time. Only once did the dress not work out (it was too hot to wear a knit dress, my bad) and they offered me a refund on it. Good luck!!

  10. Did you ever hear about Mike the headless turkey? I think that was his name...

I don't have any ballgown tips. I'm not a tomboy but I don't like to wear dresses and skirts. The dress you show us really pretty and I hope you show pictures and tell us all about it!

  12. get in touch when you're here. maybe we find time for a coffee this time. and if you need company for your events, I can dress up like a man. my hair is still short enough and I do have the body for it. maybe not the broad shoulders, but the height, and no curves to interfere with the illusion. :)

  13. Eep! That sounds so fun and lovely! I was going to suggest you find a position for me, wherein we would have to travel to these events together. But you know my propensity to fall down. Add a form fitting gown and heels and we'd be doomed for sure. So, I can't wait to hear all about it . . . and see pictures! :)

  14. I love the idea! Aside from Prom, I've never really been to an event like that so I'd have no clue where to start. Wonder if there's a similar service for something a little less fancy?
