Hide your candy!

Do y'all remember Claudia Kishi from The Babysitters' Club (yes, I know my age is showing)?  She was the "Japanese American artist" babysitter and the club meetings were always held in her room.  One of the coolest things about Claudia was NOT that she was relate-able as an Asian American teen (I didn't think she was at all).  It was NOT that she had two, count them TWO, piercings in each ear.  It was NOT that she had her own private phone line.  It was most definitely NOT that she wasn't smart but she was good at art and that made it all okay.  It was that she had junk food (read: CANDY) stashed all over her room and would pull it out at random.

Okay, maybe it was only cool to me.  But it's really all because of my mom.

My mom was a trendsetter and I credit her with being the originator of the health food and raw food craze.  As kids, we brought dried seaweed and alfalfa sandwiches to school for lunch, drank chunky fruit smoothies (Smoothie is not really the correct classification.  It was more like fruit soup.  She took every fruit in existence and blended them into a chunky brown mixture that we drank / chewed) every morning and were forbidden to eat white bread.  The ice cream we bought on occasion, mint chocolate chip ice cream, was the least junky of the ice cream flavours.

Side argument: It's not real ice cream and you know it.  The mint chocolate isn't sweet and the whole creation is a bit like eating frozen toothpaste.

Even our birthday cakes were covered with fruit.

Consequently, whenever my sister and I saw junk food, we would freak.  To this day, when I see junk food, I still feel the urge to eat IT ALL NOW because my mom might swoop out of nowhere and take it all away. Which is why, at my house, I hide junk food.  From myself.  I mention this because I did not hide the above jar of candy corn Halloween M&Ms.  And now it's gone.

So maybe Claudia Kishi and I have more in common than I thought.

  1. I always wished my name were Claudia, back in the day, because of her! I have the most terrible sweet tooth, too. It's really awful. Thank goodness decent enamel and not-so-curvacious teeth run in my family. It's truly shocking I've only had one cavity (if you could even call it that!) in my life.
    Treat yourself, girl!

  3. I love the babysitters club movie! One of my all time favorites! I hide my junk food too not because my mom doesn't want me to eat it, but so my siblings don't eat it!

  4. Oh my gosh, I remember this series! I kind of adored it when I was a kid. Heehee, Claudia was pretty much awesome - I think she was actually the first Asian I read about in an American book series...though I actually forgot about her being Japanese. It just didn't matter that much to the book, which I think is refreshing. ^^
Hahah, I definitely remember her junk food obsession. I wished I had that many sweets in my room.

  5. That is so funny and true! Having junk food rationed as a kid has ingrained this sense of urgency whenever I have it : )

  6. The bright side about the M&Ms is now they aren't there to tempt you. Problem solved. :)

I've never heard of Claudia, as you might have expected. I'm guessing the mint chocolate chip ice cream was not Blue Bell.

I used to annoy my brothers by making my Halloween and Easter candy last a long time.

  7. Haha I definitely remember Claudia! Wow, your mother was a health freeak, I would be stashing candy by now as well haha.

  8. Haha - you´re so sweet and this cracked me up! How our mothers affect us, huh?

My mom never, ever baked anything sweet to enjoy - she just made these healthy loaves of bread that tasted like cardboard or something... I was SO envious of my friends who had moms that would bake cinnamon buns and sponge cakes - and guess who´s doing that all the time nowadays..? Oh yes, that would be ME - LOVE to bake! :-)

My mother still doesn´t understand why I find that important, haha! :-)

  9. I've never seen white M&Ms before. Do they exist in Europe yet?

  10. Oh I miss halloween candy so much, you don't really get it here because halloween isn't as big - but I LOVE candy corn. Love it. And I love the idea of candy stashes :)

  11. HA! That's awesome! I've always been a junk food junkie. Always . . . and, more than likely, forever. At least when I was younger, I didn't like frosting, for instance. But now that I make my own, I'm starting to. Lord have mercy.

  12. PS-Are they just colored like candy corns? Or are they somehow flavored like them? I saw an ad, but didn't pay close enough attention. After all, the only good thing about candy corn is it makes great fangs! :)

  13. fruit soup. lol. that's hilarious :)

  14. Our moms must have been identical twins in a past life. My mom was big on the health food craze, too (as am I in my middle age). She took more freaking vitamins and drank these nasty brown shakes. As a result I had to drink the nasty shakes and take a bunch of vitamins that I couldn't swallow (a horse would have gagged) so I had to chew them. I'm dry heaving at the thought as I type.

    Anyway, I'm rambling... Sorry.

Because of being forced to consume healthy foods all. of. the. time. I would devour sweets any chance I got. I still kind of do. Mmmm chocolate.

Ps- I disagree. Mint chocolate chip ice cream is delicious!!! Especially loaded with hot fudge. :)

  15. I don't care how it looked like, I will order fruit soup from now on :)

  16. The Babysitters Club! I loved that series. I didn't eat a lot growing up, so my mom was happy that I was eating anything and didn't mind if it happened to be a box of fruit roll-ups (no fruit involved back in those days). I have a lot of bad junk food habits from both my parents, actually, haha.

  17. The BSC!!! Oh man, this post brought up some awesome memories!

    And OMG. candy corn m&m's? I can't even, I don't know what... I'm speechless.

  18. My mom was always ahead of her time too. Skim milk (my dad and I called it "gray milk") before skim milk was cool, yoga before yoga was cool...you get the picture. However, what this post reminds me of the most is what Neel and his brother used to chant every time they stayed in a hotel, "Eat sweets and watch TV! Eat sweets and watch TV!" Yeah, dog.

  29. LOL this was so funny and brought back so many memories! The Babysitter's Club was the best. And she was the coolest character- I can't believe you remembered all those details! I'm the opposite now I think- I grew up on sugar- twinkies (yuk!), brownies, cupcakes, etc, and now I barely eat any sweets.

  30. Hahhh!!! I can't have a bowl of candy in front of me and not eat it all.

I LOVE Babysitter's Club. I feel like I might need to re read all of them. Wasn't there a movie too?

  31. What a healthy diet you had as a child!

I don't recall my parents being too strict about me eating junk food so I've really craved it too much. Stu on the other hand....much more like you! He goes nuts on snacks and hides them all over the house.

  32. I'm pretty much like Claudia. I freaking LOVE junk food, especially candy. My dentist HATES me but I can't help it!

  35. That's too funny! Reminds me of my mom...when we wanted mcdonalds, she'd make us a home cooked burger and put it between two slices of bread. Just. Not. The. Same.

But I'm kind of that way with my kids now....I'm the mom that brings fruit after the games! So they go crazy around snacks, too. My daughter hides stuff. I KNOW she does!

  36. Your mom is the best! Man, I wish I could go back and pick healthier eating habits when I was younger. Maybe then I wouldn't try so hard to catch up now. :P

I loved the Babysitter Club series! My favorite character was Claudia, too. I was so excited when the movie came out! Remember that? Ahhh, good ol' childhood memories.

  37. That is hilarious. I totally make fruit smoothies which include only frozen or fresh fruits and hot tea of some sort. Banana, frozen strawberries and green tea are my favorite. But mine generally aren't brown :)

We weren't allowed to have much candy, soda and chips growing up. Even orange juice was for special occasions and served in a 4 oz glass. It took me years to get over this when I shopped on my own.
