Marrying a doctor

I have a confession to make.  I am totally geeking out over Doctor Who.  On a whim this past weekend, I decided to watch an episode; there are a ton of episodes sitting on OnDemand.  For those of you who are unfamiliar, Doctor Who is a sci fi BBC television show that began in 1963.  The Doctor is an alien traveler, a "Time Lord", who travels through space and time through an old, blue police call box called the TARDIS.  He is accompanied on his journeys by a human companion, who is the empathy link to the tv audience.  The basic premise behind the tv show is brilliant and really transcends generations - "Man from outer space and lovely young female companion encounter challenges or mysteries and solve them, saving the universe."

One of the most entertaining things to watch on the show is the relationship between the Doctor and his companion, which, in the episodes I've watched, are all young women who inevitably grow attached and fall in love with him.  He saves their lives a few times; they save his life back.  But throughout, there's this overwhelming theme of the Doctor being this lonely character - he's ageless, as a time traveler - and his companions wanting to not only help him with his quests but also be there for him.  And although the Doctor is not human, it is a very human and relatable element to craving company, particularly through the vast expanses of the universe.

I'm currently on the tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant (Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), and have watched all of series 2 and am halfway through series 3.  I'm obsessed I tell you, simply obsessed.  It's getting to where I record the Olympics and watch Doctor Who instead.  BBC, why is your programming SO GOOD???  You're killing my productivity.

  1. I remember my grandmother watching this show when I was a kid and the theme music scaring me.

I have seen a lot of bloggers talking about this show and that makes me want to try it out. I am intrigued by the premise.

  3. Bob has been trying to get me into this show for ages! I just can't. I don't have time to be hooked on another show! I did see one episode with some creepy statues, but that was it.

  5. I agree with the thumbs up to BBC. TV has hijacked my productivity this week too. I'm blaming it on the Olympics...

  11. I'm happy you're a fan--you're right, it's a great show and premise. Originally, the story was that the Doctor would be able to "regenerate" seven times. It was a really clever way to explain a change in actors. Who (no pun intended) would have guessed the show would stay on so long that 7 wouldn't be enough? Amazing.

My daughter and I are fans--this past weekend we watched the most recent episode, Amy Pond's wedding. I won't spoil it for you. :)

I've always thought being able to enjoy sci-fi is a sign of a healthy imagination.

  13. I have always wanted to watch this show because everyone in Britain has watched it and it's been on for years. I have some episodes on my Mac (the ones with Billie Piper). Now that you reminded of it, I must start watching...

  15. I love me some BBC. I've dragged my feet on Dr. Who since I'm typically more Fantasy than Sci Fi; but it is on my list to try . . . especially since Neil Gaiman wrote some of the episodes.

    My latest: Sherlock. Love.

  16. I've never watched Dr. Who but I watch plenty of other nerdy BBC sci-fi (Red Dwarf, my favorite). I love the Harry Potter reference you threw in there, too!

  20. I really want to watch this show...sounds just like something I'd love. But I'm currently making my way through all the original Star Trek episodes, so I have enough geekiness to last me awhile. =)

  23. Sounds so interesting! I've never seen this show, but it sounds like something I would like. I'm confused though, the doctors change? And it's a different girl each time? I've been going over to my friends' house to watch Girls and The Newsroom, so I'll have to see if they'd be interested in adding this to the list!
