Sorta-sporty spice

With the extra time that I've had the last six months, I've made an effort to ramp up my workout schedule.  Not that I have any desire to train for a marathon or triathlon or any other type of thon / thlon but to focus on my health and taking care of my body, which I have summarily dismissed and regretfully abused over the past six years.  Lucky for me, my sister Siri works in the sports industry and has been my saving grace and hook up for clothing, shoes, gear as well as dispensing advice and training techniques.

It's too bad all the working out I'm doing is not counteracting my eating of ALL the food.  Maybe a different set of running sunglasses would help.
What are your tips and techniques for staying active?  I am starting to think that every time I pick up a book, I should be reading while walking on the treadmill.  I could probably log a few hundred miles that way.

  2. Haha, someone looks awfully cute in glasses! Hopefully they can hold your prescription. :)

I used to work near the Crystal City underground. Two friends and I power-walked during lunch 4 days a week--underground in bad weather and on the surface in good weather. It may not sound like much, but they could both really move. I've belonged to gyms off-and-on, but that didn't work for very long.

I printed the pizza recipe today to try over the weekend. Maybe after work tomorrow.

  4. Completely agree with having to ramp up my own workout schedule. I always remember how I used to play sports in high school (though...more to fulfill requirements, not so much from my own free will) and then how, in the past year, that's really fallen to the wayside with studies and sleep taking priority. I do always try to walk every where though! And when I do manage to work out, I sometimes download podcasts I haven't heard or audiobooks to play so I don't let my eye sight get worse :33 Hope you have a good weekend! xx

  9. I am still on the prowl for some good nutrition/fitness blogs so I'll make sure to pass along my list when I've got a handful together! I am more motivated to workout when: I have workout clothes I like wearing, I have a friend (even a far way friend) who keeps me accountable (and I keep her accountable), and I think about how good I'll feel after the workout. I think mixing it up is important too - hiking on the weekends, taking the occasional spinning class at the gym, yoga at home - just so it doesn't seem like a boring, repetitive chore. Hope you're having a great weekend!

  11. haha, this is such a cute funny post Ruth. I love your running glasses, lol . I actually do run in glasses all the time but definitely not that big and your meals look healthy too. I just find always trying to switch up the workouts to different activities every week helps!

  14. Honestly, my eating and workout habits are atrocious. I'm thinking that I need to start changing this though because it seems my days of eating whatever I want without it showing are slowly coming to an end :( sad times. Xx

  16. Oh gosh, I love the idea of reading while walking! That would be perfect if I didn't do so much reading at night.

The real trick for me is just to do something I really love. Sometimes I have to change it up a bit. At the moment, I'm practicing yoga every day.

  17. I pretty much have the same problem with working out hard but then not helping myself out by eating bad. As far as workout tips, I guess I'm just lucky to have a work out partner. The boyfriend and I keep each other motivated.

  22. Gosh, I need to get on the exercise bandwagon! It doesn't help when it's freezing cold and all you want to do is sleep ;P

  23. Ha, love the photo of you wearing the gigantic sunglasses. What, those don't make you want to work out? What motivates me to workout? If I don't, I get all cranky pants. And, if I let that last for too long, I won't have any friends. I think reading whilst on a stationary bike is your answer. Go, Rooth!
