As with the orange tube of "tic tacs" that your "funny" aunt used to tuck away, every mask carries with it a different personality. Will it be the hero - brave, bold and oozing charm? Or the seductress - saccharine, slippery and slick? Quite possibly the fool - with his / her japes and jokes? Whatever the personality, people feel safe introducing it to the world behind the safety of a mask.
If I was hosting a Halloween party this year, I would throw a masquerade ball for all you fabulous bloggers out there, complete with flickering candelabras and a string quartet. The theme would be a la
The Masque of the Red Death by Poe (If you haven't read it yet, check it out for free
here. It'll put you in a Halloween kind of mood). To me, there's something incredibly sexy yet incredibly scary and spooky about masks. Is it not eerie how unrecognizable a person can be with something that covers only half of their face? Pictures of the masked revelers at the Carnival in Venice leave me with shivers running down my spine but also a curious sense of fascination - who is it that's hiding under there and what / where is his or her real personality?
Would your mask be ostentatious with all sorts of colours and feathers or more subtle and mysterious? And what personality would it come with?
The first picture is creepppppyyyy!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm planning on attending this party...next year when you get around to planning/throwing it! :-)
fun party! i think my mask would be really bold because on the inside i am very bold. i have bold thoughts and cuss like a sailor and a mini dance party is an everyday requirement in my house with my kids. but outwardly i am a quiet rule follower. so i would go for one that would nurture my, still rule following, though devilish spirit : )
ReplyDeleteThat first picture is scary. Whoa.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely go with mysterious. I love mysterious. My picks of the one you post are #2 and #4.
ps. REALLY love #4. Wowza.
And apparently I can't type in English. post = posted. That is all. :)
ReplyDeleteSubtle and mysterious. As for the personality, I only know how to be me...whatever that means. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure a rooth Halloween party would be a memorable event.
Ooh I love a masquerade! I'll wear a mask that's bright and pretty and maybe with feathers on it?
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big mask fan and this is why I didn't buy any when in Venice a couple of days ago. There is something fascinating and strange about them. That must be why a masquerade ball also featured in Fifty Shades II.
ReplyDeleteYou should see Venice then, in every corner you'd find beautifully decorated masks. I bought one on my visit :)
ReplyDeleteMasquerade parties are the best! I really like the fourth mask. So that's probably the type/design I would wear.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, masks do have personalities, some are gorgeous, some are fun . . . others are just plain creepy. Eeh.
ReplyDeleteMasquerade balls always remind me of Gossip Girl because they've had a least 2 or 3 of them it seems. I've never been to one though! Do they happen in real life??
ReplyDeleteI've never been to a masquerade ball, and I've always wanted to go to one since seeing Phantom of the Opera on stage. I really love that third one, and that would be my pick:)
ReplyDeleteI would totally come to your masquerade ball! I'd love to wear a black feathered mask - glam with a touch of creepy :-)
ReplyDeleteOhh, I've always wanted to go to a Masquerade ball! I love how romantic and mysterious they are. I think I would probably deck out a mask with lots of glitter and bright feathers ;)
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds like it would be a magnificent event! My mask would have all the bells and whistles. And feathers. Definitely feathers!
ReplyDeleteHeh. Everyone seems to think the first one is creepy but I think it's effing awesome and hope that one day I might be cool enough to pull off a painted mask. The fourth one is also gorgeous. And now I want to attend a masquerade. Decorating and planning for a masquerade would also be tons of fun! Dangit, now I wish I lived near you so we could make this happen.
ReplyDeleteOff to read me some Poe!
Something really fun about masks until your 13 year old son is invited to a Venetian Masked Ball Bat Mitzvah...chew on that one for awhile. And if you want to see the invitation, mask included, shoot me an email. We took pictures.
ReplyDeleteI want to come to your Halloween masquerade ball. I agree, there's something very frightening about these half masks, but alluring at the same time.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful masks! I think they are sexy because they usually go hand in hand with coyness and mystery (or maybe I've watched too many old movies, ha). Attending a fancy masquerade ball is on my bucket list!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous masks, except that that first photo totally freaked me out!
