Feeling e-bookish

Apologies folks - sorry to do another book post so soon.  It's just that I recently found a couple of really cool things on the interwebs that I didn't want you guys to miss out on.  Before some of you start to get your tea cozies in a tizzy with regards to e-books, I'm asking you to keep an open mind.  I myself prefer real-life-printed-on-paper books but if the below resources can encourage people to read and continue to support writers, then I'm all for it.

Humble eBook Bundle

This is a super neat concept that allows you, the reader, to pay what you'd like for a bundle of eight e-books by Neil Gaiman, Paolo Bacigalupi and Kelly Link, among others.  You name the price and can also split up your payment to go to the authors and/or the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in whatever way that you'd like.  The books are then delivered to you electronically.  This is a really great way to score some really good books for a pittance as well as support nonprofits, if you'd like.  If interested in purchasing for yourself or as a gift for a lucky someone, please go to humblebundle.com.

FridayReads

FridayReads, or #FridayReads on the twitter machine, is a way of sharing what you're reading with the tens of thousands of participants on the interwebs every Friday.  By tweeting what you are reading every Friday, you are also automatically entered into FridayReads' giveaway.  Following the #FridayReads twitter feed is always really fun and gives me new authors and genres to look into and add to my growing list of books to read.

Girl Genius

I know I may be a lone fan of this genre but there's nothing like a good graphic novel to whisk you away to far off lands and some of them actually tend to stretch your imagination further than if you were presented with words only.  Girl Genius is a comic novel that Phil and Kaja Foglio started back in 2002 and is still going strong today.  It's a steampunky, very cleverly written and illustrated comic about a sassy genius named Agatha Heterodyne.  If the tagline "Adventure, Romance, MAD SCIENCE!" doesn't draw you in, I don't know what will (maybe the fact that Agatha wears glasses?).  You can buy the print version or read it for free on their website.

Note: This is not a sponsored post.  All recommendations, for better or worse, are my own.

  2. oh boy... you must be lost twin or something... Love graphic novels, love Neil Gaiman, love everything you listed here. Well, at least the ones I knew of

  3. I don't really read graphic novels but I have an old Ren and Stimpy comic from forever ago if that counts. :)

I wish I could read on an e-thing because I wouldn't have to lug a giant hardcover book to work and back but I can't seem to concentrate on them. I haven't made it more than 5 pages into any sort of ebook - PDF or other variety.

  4. I have a little stockpile of reads waiting to be read at the moment. But when I finish with them, I'll have a look at FridayReads to find new ones.

  6. HumbleBundle is a great idea! Interesting that Linux users have paid more, on average. As for Girl Genius, any publication that uses words like gadzooks and verily deserves to be supported. :)

  7. I think I'll always love the smell of printed books and the bookshops but I must admit, I'm enjoying the convenience of being able to carry as many books as I'd like stored in a kindle when traveling. FridayReads sounds interesting and I'll check out HumbleBundle. Thanks for this post. :)

  11. So I have a kindle and I'm very happy for it. It's kind of like having another knife in my knife block...pull it out for some books and not for others. It's great for travel and bedtime reading. But I do love me my paperbacks. The printed page will never go out of style for me!

  12. Oooh, books! I'm all for building my library one hardback at a time, but there's nothing like an ebook for travel or emergencies! So thank you for giving us a few more options . . .

  19. ha! whenever someone mentions kindles or e-books my son quickly shoots me a glare begging me to not go on my electronic reading device tangent. which goes from the glory of paper from flipping the pages to fabulous scent of books - to what if the world ended and they had stopped producing paper books, where would we be? - to don't we spend enough time looking at a screen as it is?! but your point about getting people to read, i am fully on board with that! xo

  20. I'm going to check out all these sites and download some books before my flight tomorrow :)

    Thanks!

  21. Like you, I still love reading an actual book. I'm pretty sure this love will never die. I do have a Kindle for times when my book club selects some chic lit book and I don't necessarily want a physical memory of it on my bookshelf. [wink]
