Never been spammed

If summer 2012 is going to be about experimentation, I might as well start with the deadliest thing I can think of ingesting - spam.  AKA potted meat.  Sounds simply delicious and delightful, doesn't it?  If you can believe it, I've actually never had spam before.  Meat from a can has just never had the opportunity to pop up on my radar.  And when I announced this to a casual gathering of my peers, they were aghast.

"Never tried spam before?!  But you're missing out!"

What I want to know is how and when they've actually tried spam.  We were born in the 80's - I didn't even know spam was something that was acceptable to eat back then.  I consider myself a pretty experimental eater as well, maybe not a foodie, but I've eaten a lot of strange things.

However, nowadays spam is gaining in popularity.  A good number of quite popular food trucks actually offer it up and people pay real money for it.  And I want to know why.  I have heard it is uber salty and like an extreme, denser version of bologna, which I happen to love.  There are also a variety of diverse manners in which you can prepare it.  The most popular that I've come across is spam musubi - a la Hawaii.  I've listed out some of the tasty recipes that I've unearthed on the interwebs in the order that I would try these.  Which one of these have you had before?  And which one do you think I should try first?

As an aside, I've left out spam fried rice from the collection of photographs and recipes.  Because I won't bastardize my fried rice recipe anymore than I already have.  My relatives, I'm sure, are rolling over in their graves.

  3. Okay, I have to confess that I LOVE Spam but I do my best to not buy it much because I know it's not that great for me. Still, coming from a Honkie background, we love our spam in sandwiches, with noodles (aka above) and with rice. If my mum didn't feel like cooking when I was young, she would often fry up some egg and spam and we would serve that with rice. I LOVED those meals. Mmmm... might have to check out the Spam aisle the next time I'm at the supermarkets. :)

  4. Apparently I had spam as a child, but I don't remember it. Friends of mine rave over Spam Musubi so if I was going to try one that would probably be it. But I'm most likely not going to. Your fried rice comment cracked me up!

  5. As a lover of spam, I'm truly shocked you've never had it before! For shame, for shame, Ruth....
But seriously, it's the best! I usually eat it with white rice and fried egg, which is probably why that Spam burger is making me salivate:P
PS Have you seen that Spam skit from the Monty Python? The best, I tellz yah!

  7. I love an egg on my burger, not sure about spam though.

This is almost too strange to share, but I have a can of spam (and a can of deviled ham) that I bought for the sole purpose of experimenting. There's been a slight delay because I also bought a can of chicken "spread" that turned out to be disgusting. I need to let that memory fade before trying to get my kids to taste something new. I like to have them try new things. They loved Nutella, but grocery store caviar was a miss (I blogged about that experience). Just for fun, I also tried combining Nutella and caviar--it wasn't gross (the chocolate masked the fishy and the salty/sweet combined well).

I had spam as a kid, but don't remember clearly how it tastes. I kept seeing it touted on cooking shows as being huge in Hawaii, so I decided to give it a try. Now if I can just convince the family to join me. =)

  9. I'm sure I've had spam before, though I don't really remember it! But some of that stuff looks really good. I'd totally try the spam musubi and spam pizza bake. I kind of want to go make that egg sandwich right now!

(Not sure if I would do the spam PB&J though....)

And I was totally thinking about putting it in fried rice until I read your comment! :) But then, my mom used to make fried rice with hot dogs for me when I was a kid.

  13. Never had spam once in my life, my mom would have rather died than brought a can of that into our house. I have to admit, I kind of love the packaging though! The typography is so recognizable.

  15. thanks for visiting my site! I grew up eating spam, it was always in our pantry. My grandpa used to make it all.the.time. Sliced very thin and fried with scrambled eggs was always my favorite. My brother always had a penchant for Spam Musubi which you can pretty much find at any Japanese market in California.

  16. Ooooh I had totally forgotten about the wonders of Spam! I will only admit this here but I actually like kind of like spam! Spam sandwiches as a child were one of my favourite treats. It’s definitely fallen out of fashion and become sort of ‘forbidden’ in our house and truthfully I can’t see myself buying it again but you have to try it at least once in your life! I’d go for the Spam burger if I were you!

  22. I like spam - but I don't eat too much of it. I don't know for sure but the sodium level must be so high - because it oozes off that dang salty goodness. LOL.

But PB & J spam sandwich...ehh I'm not sure about that.....

  23. Ummm....I don't think even with the tasty photos in your post I could ever bring myself to eat Spam. Don't get me wrong - I'm no food snob, but the name just makes me shudder.....
