Vegan food isn't gross!

Well who would have thunk it.  Not only have I turned into a foodie blogger, with my last two posts on spam and my crap eating habits, but vegan food doesn't taste disgusting anymore!  I am generally opposed to "fake" versions of meat.  My parents became vegetarian in the early nineties and I can recall several bad experiences with fake bacon, fake ham and fake sausage.  Salty, crumbly and dry fake meat does not a vegetarian child make.  I'm not certain when this vegan revolution occurred but I took my mom to a vegan diner today on a whim and the food was good.  Delicious even.

My mom kept repeating over and over again while she noshed on her vegan burrito, "this tastes really healthy, " which is I took to mean "this doesn't taste that great."  I should have expected it, given she had asked the waiter if they served "real cheese" on their burritos and he responded in the negative.  But my faux egg and bacon sandwich was quite yummy.  The tofu scramble and soy bacon both tasted realistic enough to pass my palate and I washed it all down with a non-dairy cookies and cream milkshake.  It tasted exactly like a dairy version - quite impressive!  I am pretty certain that I couldn't do a vegan diet all the time but if I could eat food like this, maybe it would be a more regular occurrence in my food repertoire.

Have you tried vegan food lately and did you find it to be acceptable or disgusting?

  1. I don't know, Rooth. You're going to have to go a long way to convince me.

  2. Ooooo...that sandwich does look good! I've eaten some vegan dishes (although not in awhile) and actually did love them... vegan food has come a long way, eh?

  3. I was expecting grilled eggplant or mushrooms. I've never been to a vegan restaurant, but I've enjoyed plenty of vegetarian dishes. Szechuan tofu, butternut squash soup and veggie burritos and fried rice are springing to mind. Soy bacon is hard to imagine, but it's going on my list of things to try. If it turns out I don't like it, I can always cover it in Rudy's sause. :)

I'm wondering if your tastes have changed or the vegans have gotten more creative. I'm also kind of surprised mom wasn't psyched about you going meatless at lunch.

My sister swears there's no diary in Dairy Queen cakes because they don't upset her stomach. Not very scientific, but thinking that helps her to enjoy it.

PS - Is it weird that in a post about food, a nail color has me craving a creamsicle??? :)

  5. It's not bad at all but I certainly need some real protein in my diet!

  6. I'm a vegetarian, but I've never really tried the fake meats or fake cheese/dairy either.

  7. I've never tried vegan food before but would be curious to find out what fake cheese/ milkshake/cookies tastes like!

  8. No it isn't!
I was vegan for a while and, with the exception of yogurt, absolutely loved everything I ate. And preparing vegan food is FAR easier than everyone thinks. Mind you, eating out is a whole other challenge.

  9. I've been a vegetarian for over 16 years. I hate fake meat products - that's one of the things that weirds me out! I don't want to eat bacon, so why would I want to eat something that tastes like bacon but is not?

But I'm happy the food was delicious!

I eat vegan fairly regularly but only when things are naturally vegan, I don't go out of my way to buy fake cheese :)

  11. Eeh, vegan . . . I might be with your mom! :) I would, however, like to experiment with more vegetarian dishes.

  12. I actually like vegan food, though I don't go out of my way to eat it. Vegan sweets are probably my favorite...my friend makes delicious vegan cookies!

  13. Thanks for sharing this - vegan food isn't gross at all, yet so many think it is! I've been vegetarian for 7 + years (although I started eating fish about two and a half years ago) and have learned so much about how other people view my decision.

  14. Vegan food can be quite delicious, and I definitely understand why some people eat that way... I just love "real" bacon from time to time! I do try to limit meat in my diet to about 2 times a week though. But I'm perfectly happy eating mostly veggies, fruits and beans!

  15. I dated a strict vegan for 5+ years (no soy, no oil on top of everything else!) so while I didn't keep that diet myself, I ate a lot of the food he did. I have no objection to vegan food done well! It changes things up.

  17. ABSOLUTELY true! We've been going vegetarian and it takes a bit of research but we definitely feel more healthy and clean. Also there's so many great vegan restaurants popping up that it makes it easier!

Thx for the birthday wishes too xoxo

  18. We really eat little meat (she says as she prepares to grill burgers for dinner tonight!), but I don't think I'll ever be a vegetarian. That being said, PETA is headquartered in the town where I live and you can pick out all the vegans here because they tend to look wan and gray! And my son had a boy on his baseball team last fall who was tired all the time and so s-l-o-w when he ran the bases... turns out they were strict vegans too. We were convinced that boy needed more protein! Just sayin'!

  19. I actually really like vegan food! I think when done well, it doesn't even need to mimic meats or dairy based foods. It's delicious in its own right. If you find a good vegan restaurant (and it sounds like you got one) it can make all the difference.

  21. Yup, vegan food is quite yummy - I was introduced to it by my ex co-workers. Plus, I'm a sucker for tofu and tempe , so gimme gimme!

  22. Its good but limited ... I remember my sister had a vegan flatmate at uni, one evening she and her 8 flatmates went out for diner to celebrate a birthday or something ... anyway two hours and lots of restaurants later they were still trekking around Nottingham (not a small city!). They eventually ended up at a baked potato place as it was the ONLY restaurant that had one single dish that was vegan - potato and baked beans!!!

  23. I don't think I could ever part with cheese (mmm), so going vegan as a lifestyle is not for me!

  24. One of my friends is a strict vegan and whatever place she took me so far they served great food. She's a great cook too! I just don't want to eat anything that is called chicken, duck, bacon or whatever that is not the real thing because that just sounds so weird to me ;)

  25. I've been dabbling in vegan food since I stopped eating poultry, pork and beef last summer and I have been more often impressed than disappointed. Mock meat is something I'm still not craaazy about, especially the processed kind you get at the grocery store, but there are some ah-mazing vegan restaurants (and food carts!) here in Portland that I actually crave all the time, and their "meats" are great. A full-time vegan diet is difficult tho! It turns into a lifestyle rather than being just a diet, and the hardest part about it (for me) is dining with friends and family who aren't vegan. Have you seen the documentary Forks Over Knives? It's incredible and definitely has me trying harder in the vegan diet department.

Hope you're having a nice weekend!
