On being a book auntie

via Society6
I'm taking a slight break on the What I Will (Not) Miss series today to chatter about my little pal J.  If you've been following my blog, you may remember that the little guy was born around this time last year.  He is much much bigger now, starting to walk and coming on his first birthday.  We're throwing him a little shindig next week to celebrate (I don't think he'll really care but the adults will).

Like a lot of you bibliophile bloggers, my love of reading started at a very young age - my toddler pictures were pretty much all either at the zoo or plopped in front of my bookshelf in my room.  J's momma feels the same way I do about reading and the little man gets read to every single night by his parents.  It's never too early to start!  So naturally for his first birthday, he's going to get some books from his Auntie Rooth.  Just thinking about the books I'm going to get him throughout the years gives me goosebumps.  He'll meet curious characters such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar,  Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and Ferdinand the Bull and be whisked away into far off lands of The Phantom Tollbooth and Narnia.  He'll learn the meaning of friendship with Doctor Dolittle and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle and vanquish evil adults alongside Matilda and Harry Potter.

Oh the places he'll go and the people he'll meet.  It's a grand new world that he's going to step into and I can't wait to help him along the way.*

*Okay, so I admit right now we're starting with a lot of 'board books' so he won't rip the books to shreds or eat the pages but you gotta start somewhere.

  1. Board books are great--next year (or the next) he can graduate to pop-up books.

You've got some great books in mind for his future. I was never a fan of Curious George, but I seem to be in the minority on that. I didn't like Clifford (the big red dog) either.

Someday, LOTR and the Hobbit. :)

  2. I heard book reading to a baby at bedtime will establish an awesome habit of reading when he grows up!! Hopefully you're contributing for his beautiful and artistic habit-to-be!

  4. I'm such a book auntie myself - a few of my friends have kids, and they all get books from me. The best thing you could ever give a child - except for love, of course.

  7. I'm the same way with our niece. She's only 6 months old but I've already been asking what books she has so far so I can be sure to introduce her to lots of fun characters and adventures. When I nannied, the kids I cared for always got books from for their birthdays and we had weekly outings to their neighborhood library. I feel like it's even more vital to emphasize the importance of books and reading because there will be so many other "tech" toys competing for their attention soon!

  10. Oh yes, I know that feeling. I get it with my little ones as well as with my niece and nephew. I love to give them books. In fact I get too many! My 4 year old has 3 full bookshelves (they're not so little either). But I digress. Board books are great and you can start with some wonderful ones too - all of Eric Carle's books come as board books and lots of Dr Seuss as well. Happy birthday little J and enjoy your books!

  12. Oh, I'm totally the Book Aunt. My nieces (I have 3, all my brother's) get books from me for every holiday. My parents read to me for years and years and my love of books basically defines me. Books are always a good idea! You're going to be his favorite one day.

  14. Cute! And I love the ideas of books you have to give for the future. When I was younger, I used to get book store certificates for my birthdays and it was...so much fun to go to the book store and hang out trying to figure out what to read haha. I don't have any nieces or nephews yet, but I basically got my suite mates books. Even if we're not little anymore :33

  15. I grew up loving books too. I remember my weekly indulgence was a trip to the library to pick up new ones. How sweet of you to get him started on reading too.

  16. I haven't been giving books to my nieces and nephew because they all have so many {of the good ones too}, but I love to sit down with them and read. I'm often tricked into reading three and then given a 50 page book in the stack. :)
