What I will (not) miss - Round 2

Oh the food.  I could devote an entire blog just to the good eats in Houston.  I truly believe that this is the best eating town in all of the United States - best eating defined as best quality food for the best price with the best service.  Bold claim but you guys really have to get here and try it.  Just aim for the non-summer months.

I will miss the food.  I can't believe that I'm leaving right at the beginning of crawfish season.  Honey dolls, if you like the spicy stuff, then you have got to go to an authentic crawfish boil.  There are some restaurants in town that will work in a pinch but there are a good, rowdy bunch of Louisiana transplants here that do just a bang up job.  Also, the Chinatown is one of the best that I've been to.  I've become more of a connoisseur of Vietnamese food here and also learned to love me some Malaysian cuisine.  There are veritable dim sum palaces, complete with wedding ballrooms, located right across the street from each other.  Pick one, you can't go wrong and try not to get into an accident in the parking lot.

I will not miss the food.  I'm pretty pumped about the new food discoveries that I'll make in Dallas.  The Dallas / Fort Worth area has had six breweries open in the past year.  Spiral Diner is a pretty good substitute for my favourite Houston vegan restaurant, even if it's not Tex-Mex.  My fast food guilty pleasure Taco Bueno "Better Than Taco Bell" is also located in Dallas.  Plus, I'll get to eat more of my Dad's good good cooking.  Now all I have to make sure is that I keep up the exercise program (which hasn't been going so well this year) so I don't also turn into the fat Texan stereotype.

  7. When I clicked on your blog, your food collage just made me go.."Omg!" Wish I could visit Texas one day and delight in food. I'm now really curious about Houston. I remember my last visit to the U.S. and at the end of our vacation, the husband and I could hardly fit in our clothes because it was just amazing food everywhere. All the best to your move to Dallas.

  9. I've never been brave enough to conquer crawfish and I'm not a huge fan of southern cooking (I do like BBQ in moderation, though!). I think it's great that you'll be able to eat more of your dad's home-cooking though!

  17. You would love Chinatown in Boston, there are entire streets lined with dim sum and hot pot {you don't even have to drive between them, just walk across the tiny one way streets and you can fill up again!}

    You should try Tibetan food if you haven't. It is some of the most delicious food I've had {and I only remember having vegetable soup and momos.

    I am going to see if I can use the phrase 'Honey Doll' into a sentence tomorrow.

  18. Oh my gosh I can't believe I didn't know you were moving to Dallas! I have put blog reading on the back burner for farrrr too long. That is so exciting!! I'm gonna have to go back into your archives to find out more about this big life change!

    I totally, 100% agree with you that Houston has the BEST food. Mmm crawfish, one of my absolute favorites. I have never had anything as hot as a bowl of Houston crawfish in my life. And funny you mention Vietnamese food because my family went to the most amazing, hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant near Minute Maid park (when MM wasn't there) growing up and I have never found another that even comes close.

    You're making Dallas sound really great too, food-wise. I have never been! So weird since I was born in Houston and lived there until I set out for college.

    Hope you're having a great week lady!

  21. Though I have heard that this area is pretty rich food wise, I haven't really had any of it.

    Seems like I'm missing out!
